But what do you all recommend to take care of constipation?  First time since my surgery and I'm miserable!!

Debi, I was so constipated the first couple of months that I came here and pleaded for a remedy. Nothing worked. No stool softners, not nothing until one of the sisters here told me about flax seeds and I went to the health food store and bought them and ate them in my cream of wheat and they were the magic cure.  I crush mine and put them in either cream of wheat or yogurt or some other soft food. STart with a tablespoon and work up.  When you get to eat regular food, you will be able to find the foods that keep things moving and you won't have to depend on flax seeds or stool softners.  The food I eat on a daily basis is two apple wedges.  Keeps things working like clock work.

I'm off to the grocery to get some or all of your suggestions!  I think I'll get the stool softener and the tea - I like very much the idea of drinking a tea instead of taking medicine, especially when I drink tea all the time anyway.  Thanks for all your support!!

Don't take anything until you check with your doctor.  You are so new to the losers bench that there may be things to consider that we don't know about.  No one here is qualified to give medical advice.  We can only say what works or worked for us.  Your doctor is your first go to person.  Ask him what he thinks of the suggestions you receive here.  Hope you get relief soon.

Benefiber this close to surgery, but stool softeners help too. Sometimes fiber will just bulk you up and make things worse (make it harder to go). When I was just out of surgery, I had diarrhea, and my doc told me not to take immodium for any reason whatsoever ever again. (I used to use it a lot because I have irritable bowel syndrome.) So I called the bariatric center and asked the nurse what I should do ... I thought fiber would help ... she said Benefiber would be good but I should use immodium. I said, "What? Dr. Foote said I should never use that again, ever." I guess she didn't get the message.

Anyway, a couple of years later, I was found to be iron deficient and had to add iron pills into my regimen. That made me constipated even more. So the PA told me to take stool softeners. I take one every night before I go to bed now. While it doesn't always work wonders, it usually helps. If that doesn't work, prunes work wonders. But I think you should ask your doctor about fiber, stool softener and prunes before you take any of these, because every bariatric center is different about introducing new foods/meds into your diet. We are not doctors, just patients.

Good luck! Success!
