Hi, I am thinking of scheduling a colonoscopy soon , was just wondering if it is performed the same way as someone that has not had Wls? Anyone here have one done after Wls?  Is it done in the hosp or in doctors office? give me a few tips what to expect, any pain involved? Like to hear it from someone who has had one already...thanks a bunch............Wendy

Things have changed with colonoscopies these days.  It used to be you had to drink a gallon of stuff.  My PCP told me to tell the doc I wanted the pills.  They are much easier.  (My wife was so mad, because she had her colonscopy and was not told about the pills - same doc.  I told her you don't know if you don't ask)

i had one a few months ago and it was done in one of those outpatient surgery centers

other than the prep the night before which is a pain in the you know what, the test does not hurt. they give you light sedation and it is over and you are home before you even realize you are done

good luck, jacki

I was concerned about the rearrangeing of our intestines interfering with the tests? Any ideas?

My WL surgeon did my colonoscopy I had some pain in the lower right quadrant of my side near my ovary. They wanted to rule out anything with the colon.

I don't think they get up far enough to affect the small intestines except where they meet.

I had to drink the horrible stuff the night before after I took pills the prior night.

Next morning they knocked me out and did the colonoscopy they found nothing and the doctor couldn't talk to the next of kin. So he drew me a pretty picture

All went well I slept the rest of that day and part of the next.

I have had two colonoscopies but not after wls. I don't think the wls would have any effect on the procedure as it involves the lower intestinal tract.  A routine colonoscopy is completely painless although maybe a tad humiliating.  The worst part of it is the prep you have to do the night before. They have you drink a gallon of sort of bad tasting liquid to clean out the intestines.  It is nothing to fear and much is gained by the exam.  I have had non cancerous polyps removed both times then went out and had lunch with my daughter.

Hey just noticed you're a husker gal.  Me too. I'm in Omaha.  Had my colonoscopies at Bergan Mercy and the one before that at the gastrointestinal place on 76 & Cass.  Watching the game tomorrow??

I've done 2. Colon cancer in the family and the age thing.

I did this:
one day clear liquids
next day also clears all day but
7 am drank phospho soda (1.5 oz) with 8 oz liquid
drank water all day--made me SO thirsty!
7 pm, repeat phospho soda mix

For the first one, I went to Hospital X and had to not drink after the 2nd dose. I was almost too dehydrated to walk in. I was disoriented, stumbling and of course, no veins.

For the second, I went to Clinic X and was able to drink water up to 2 hours before my appt time. I walked in alert and feeling fine. They got a vein on the first try. This doc had started to write for the various rx things and I said, "Pouch, remember? Howzabout I do phospho soda x 2 and clears?" and he said sure.

Phospho soda is found on the bottom shelf of the laxative aisle. Fleet, comes in 1.5 or 3 oz bottles. It'll set you back darned near $4. LOL

With both, I was pretty much asleep. Felt a bit of a cramping around one corner (same place both times), and that's all. I'm due again 2010. OH boy.

Most ppl will say that it's not the procedure, it's the prep.

My warning would be to have several beater small towels or wash cloths and some beater undies in the bathroom before you take that 1st PS. LOL You think you're done, but SURPRISE! You're not!
