MaryAnn,

53 is not too old!

I had WLS at age 54 and it has been great for me.  I have 2 friends who had WLS at age 53 and they also have done very well.

In my opinion, older patients have a better chance of success with WLS because they are better able to follow their surgeon's and nutritionist's instructions and are more willing to take responsibility for their health than younger patients.

Good luck!
Jean

I was 53 when I had my surgury.  I  had a few problems  but they resolved themselves.
I feel much better,  I move so much easier now.     I do wonder if my MS is beginning to get worse, but that would have happened when I was my highest at 360 or at surgury weight 252.  I like to think the weight loss has slowed any progress that evil disease  will make.   You will do great!!

HECK NO!  I recently read that the median age for women having gastric bypass surgery is 51.  I was 51... and I feel so wonderful!  I think the 50's are the best years... don't let your age stop you.  You go for it!

Mary Ann, you are not to old to have your new life. I was 53 years old when I had my open rny. I am now 54 years young. My only regret is that I didn't have it sooner but then again I probably wouldn't have been ready for it. I feel so much more better. You will do great and just remember that you are never to old to better yourself and your health.

I am sorry that it took you so long to come to the end of the road but in the end it will make it more precious to you. I promise you that. Good luck to you.

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter
that tells what kind of life you have lived.

Well, I'm 53 and I don't think it's too old. Of course, I was 49 when I had it, but if I had to do it again this year, I wouldn't think I was too old. There are people on this board who are in their 60s that had it. You are not too old. Your doctors approved you for this surgery because they thought you were healthy enough, so you are. MaryAnn, you are not too old. You're a youngster!

Definitately NOT too old.  I am 58 and just had RNY in Nov.
I already feel much better although I am at a stall for the last 2 weeks.
Eating is sure a new learning experience, but well worth it.

I had my surgery last year at the ripe old age of 55.  I am 56 now and feel better and younger than I have in years!     I LOVE my RNY, it's changed my life, for the better.

I AM 56 YEARS OLD.  I HAD MY RNY THIS PAST NOVEMBER 3rd.  NO, I DID NOT FEEL TOO OLD.  I JUST WISH I DID IT SOONER.  OH, WELL.

MaryAnn:

I waited almost 56 yrs. to feel "normal" and not always be the fattest person in a group of people.  If you are healthy otherwise, please don't let the opportunity to have the surgery pass you by.  There's many healthy years ahead for you and your life can change dramatically.....hopefully all for the good.

Hope to hear that you are more positive about the surgery and keep everyone updated as your surgery date approaches.

PS.  I don't visit OH often but do check in periodically.
