Feeling like a bad cat mommy
I've been sitting here at work all night worrying about Diva. I had to scoop her up and lock her in the bathroom with just litter box, food and water, to keep her from pooping on the floor. She pounded on the doors (as much as a little cat like her can do) and meowed to get out.
I feel so bad giving her back to her former mommy while I'm in the hospital having knee surgery and recovering. I love her and I'm going to miss her. But I don't want to do the alternative, which was to euthanize her. She's a healthy cat, I believe, who has strayed into some bad habits. I just don't know what else to do.
I feel like such a bad cat mommy though. I have tried just about everything I can think of to help Diva.

Eileen,
You're not a bad cat mommy. I've had cats my entire life. And I went thru this with one of mine.
Before my mom died, she was in Rochester, MN for 3 months. Being single with no kids, I was the one that stayed up there the most. I was gone the first whole month. I lived with her after my dad died. Anyway, I had a black persian, very cute boy named Marv. A friend of mine was staying at the house because I also had a dog and we had 2 cats. But Marv was mad his mom was gone. He would poop on my bed every chance he got. If Kelly left the bedroom door shut, he was fine, he always went in his box. But every chance he got he went in there to poop!
Even after mom died, and I didn't leave anymore he did it off and on. Then one day it just stopped! I guess he figured it out.
I did everything I could think of, and all it took was time. And now I have a gray and white persian, Earl. If he is pissed at me for some reason, he pees on the bed! I think his started when I used to be gone alot.
I know you've been busy at work and stuff, have you been gone more than usual? If that is her problem, giving her to her former mom might be a good idea when you are gone having surgery.
I don't know if it helped, but just know you're not a bad mom! I've been there too...but when you've tried everything, what else can you do?

Nancy:
Thanks for your kind words. Nope, haven't been gone more than usual, just to work and bac****asionally to the store or the doctor. I haven't been to an overnight lately ****il this coming weekend when I'll go to Chicago). My cleaning lady says she's noticed Diva seems to be demanding more attention lately.
Read the daily post ... Diva escaped from the "jail" I made for her in the bathroom ... she opened the door. I should have figured she'd be able to do that ... and then she pooped on the rug in the front bedroom, where the cat tower used to be. She didn't get her treats tonight. And oh my, it was a big mess of poop!
Nancy, it's good to see your face finally.

Eileen,
You are a GOOD cat Mommy !!!!!!! Diva is lucky that you haven't flushed her down the toilet.
She needs to be someplace while you recouperating and she will be in good hands.
If this is a habit, perhaps the cycle will be broken. You mentioned that she will be going to the Vet, that's good.
Locking her in the bathroom is not such bad punishment. She has food, water, litter and a warm place to sleep. Most people would have tossed her outside and locked the door... forever.
Cats are stubborn critters. Some antics are merely annoying, pooping all over the house is beyond annoying, that is unhealthy and unforgivable. You don't have any other choice for now. This might be the best solution until you are back on your feet.
I know you feel sad and love your Diva. You are a perfect Mom.
Kisses

Eileen, you are not and could never be a bad kitty mommy. It just is not in you so get that thought out of your head!
I think that kitties are very stubborn little ones and Diva is most definitely pushing the envelope on this little "antic". There is no way that you would be able to take care of her after surgery and I think that letting her go visit her "other mom" is a great idea. That may be just the thing she needs to get her out of her new bad habit. She will appreciate her home a bit more possibly?

Eileen - you're not a bad mom. Our pets can be trying, at times, and they can't talk to us to tell us what's going on. So we have to do what we can to try to figure things out, and you've done that. You'll both get a breather from each other and who knows, she may return with a changed demeanor!
