Yoga?? My experience....

Well, I researched and found a yoga class for beginner's at the Senior Center... Thought - well, maybe that is for me.  I am nearly 55 and I can be a part of the Senior Center...
So I went today - 2 pm to 3:30 pm.

OMG - the instructor used words I have never heard of before !  And wanted me to get on the Floor !  I haven't been on the floor in forever, about had a panic attack - and I have NEVER had a panic attack.  I declined politely and said I wanted to observe today and I would join in where I felt comfortable.  She rung a little bell several times, but I never knew why.  Thank goodness I was the 4th person there, so I didn't feel too self-conscious.

All I can say is I am so glad I didn't pay money for this adventure.  I was allowed a chance to drop in and see.

I doubt that I will be back.  I am more of a water aerobics or Richard Simmons type of gal... give me some fast music and some fun steps to do and I will be there......

OMG Shelia....I am still laughing.  Two years and approx. 30 pounds lighter I joined Yoga class per my Doctor's recommendation (for anxiety and not able to do strenuous or impact exercises due to knee fracture 4 years ago)  I can relate how you felt that first time.  The instructor was very nice and explained everything and I DID get down on the floor and went through quite a few positions and the best part was the cool down and relaxation time.  It is very relaxing but I felt intimidated as the oldest and fattest person there.  I went for about 3 months and then started taking care of my grand daughter at the same time the class was so I used that as my excuse to end that experience.  I do have the dvd and did the exercises for awhile at home but that like everything else requires dedication and  pooooof I quit that too.  Well perhaps after losing a desirable  amt of weight I will go back because it did relaxe me and did wonders for my muscles and joints.  I will start some sort of exercise program after my 2 week check with the Bariatric Surgeon.  I need to have low impact at first I know.  I guess we all find the right exercise program for our needs.

Sandy - at least you made it 3 months... I wanted to run aftr the first 30 minutes.  But stayed the entire time.
Boy, am I sore this morning.  I went to water aerobics yesterday at 11, came home and showered to go to the yoga class.  I think the yoga positions is what made me sore.  And I realize that is good to use some muscle groups that I don't usually use, but..... not with yoga for me.

I am going to get in the floor and see how I can get up - in the privacy of my own home !  May have to have the phone nearby in case I have to call my daughter for help !  LOL

Yes there is some type of exercise out there for everyone.  I still prefer the water aerobics, cycling, walking, and once in awhile Richard Simmons.

I could think of a few words for the instructor.....that she probably has not heard of said to her.  I am so sorry you  had that experience.
I go to our YMCA here and do water exercises, the instructors are so nice and go out of their way to explain stuff to the new ones, and they tell me to just do what I can (I had several hip surgeries last year).
I did go to a seminar where they had a Yoga insturctor there.  She had exercises that a person could do in their chair.  Really relaxing, I would pay to go to her classes but 100 miles is a bit to far for me to drive a couple times a week.

Barb - I would like to do a chair type exercise program until I lose some more weight.  I will have to look into that around here.  We are a small rural area and sometimes are lacking in variety.

I've never tried yoga, but it looks like it could be fun. I did go to a pilates class once. This was when I was 80 pounds lighter, and working with a personal trainer 3 times a week. But that made me more sore than anything we'd done at the gym! Luckily that class was just 4 people, and I knew 3 of them!

But I need fast music too, I should get a Richard Simmons DVD.
