Jobs.....

I finally had a call on one of my resumes.... an admin job out on the Army base near me... They said that there was several hundred applications, and mine was received. Then a couple of days later telling me I was in the final 10 and would be getting a call soon for a telephone interview. After a few more days I got a call and went through the phone interview... she said she would get back to me soon. Another couple of days and I get a call.... she says that I am in the final 4 and will be going to an on site interview the next day. I go, and do the interview, take the tour, meet everyone... seemed to go great!

..... then a call the next day saying I didn't get chosen.....

It sure is weird how life has changed.... I used to never lose at anything.... always tried to be the best at all I tried.... even Coast Guard schools I attended I always finished first..... just a real competitive proud person I guess.... and now I can't even get a stinking mediocre paying job!

I can't try any harder... really. I am so disgusted with all of this... so many applications sent it, so many resumes out there... and I only get one response and lose that! I tell myself it is all Gods will... and I am sure it is, but I am really at wits end... and broke too.... me and my clunky knee are ready to go!

I am considering taking a low paying grocery store job or something... and just starting over somewhere, somehow.... I don't know what esle to do really... the job market is flooded with people and it is really tough to get a look nowadays...

*sigh*

Thanks ..... needed to spout off again....

Marc, I'm so sorry you didn't get the job.  It's their loss.  Prayers and fingers crossed that something great comes your way soon.

The job market is just flooded right now. Companies are laying off people right and left. We got our buyout offers today (I'm not signing mine). That will mean more people on the market in Michigan, where there are so many unemployed as it is (second-highest in the nation, where there has been a real recession long before anyone dared speak the "R" word). My brother works for AIG and is waiting for the ax to fall there. They already got their severance package and their unit hasn't been sold yet.

This is as bad as it gets; as bad as it was in the '70s when I was right out of college and interviewed at job after job and couldn't get hired at a newspaper (I didn't get a newspaper job til '79 and graduated from college in '77). Can't tell you how many hundreds of resumes I sent out, most unanswered, how many interviews I went on. In the early '80s, when I was interviewing again, more of the same (this is back when I was obese, too ... try finding a job then).

So while I know this is discouraging ... hang in there, Marc. If you have to, take whatever you can get and then keep looking for something better. I know that's difficult to do. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

You have to keep trying Marc, it took me a full year to finally get a job. I submitted over 75 resumes a week to places....then I thought about the company here in town and thought heck I'll try that one, they didn't advertisie even, and I got a job.....you just never know....don't give up....it will happen!!!

Marc - I wish there were some answers... Spout off anytime you need to...  you have earned the right.

I tend to agree - do what you can to make ends meet and keep looking for something that is what you want.

Hugs,

I was so moved by your note, especially that you were able to trust your thoughts to the OFF group.
You can't do anything more then you alread have done.  Isn't it a shame you have the talent to offer, and got rejected... Well just what your motto at the bottom of your story goes so I think will yoiu. You sound like you have lots of  ***** and I hope that you get whatever you want in the near future.
A job you will like and  a new future. I am sorry you had to go through this and I bet you will be chosen for a new and better job soon, until then.... keep your resumes "out there" and we will be pulling for you! When the going get's tough...the tough gets going, I used to hate that expression but it seems to fit. Good Luck! Lola

Oh, Mark, hang in there.  Somewhere there is a job with your name on it.  These are VERY tough times.  It seems the only businesses flourishing are pawn shops and fast food places (my daughter's company has 30 Taco Bells and they are doing a booming business).  Bell ringing for the SA pays $7 an hour here, but it must be a cold, wet job!  Places like WalMart and Costco are usually hiring for the holidays, and if you are good, they may keep you on.  All menial work, I know, but with your experience, you could probably work up to management quickly.  I sure hope the new guns in Washington can turn things around for this country!

Marc,
My two cents that used to be two and now I will say MY ONE CENT ....  It is always easier to find a job when you have a job for some reason regardless of what you have whether it is  grocery bagger or a brain surgeon.
Being without one and health problems too make a dismal picture.  I too , have been there and wi**** on noone.. Maybe you can take ANY JOB unless your on un-employment and the money would be less until you can find something else..
The state of our country is causing me and others great concern as so many are losing their jobs now and it isnt looklng good.
I know you have thought of all this and this isnt a revelation , just know that your in my prayers as well and so many of us are thinking of you and your situation ,,,
Take care

Hi Marc

We dont know each other but I wanted to let you know how sorry I am for you and all the others who are looking for work in this challenging economy.
I have a job that involved hiring and from my perspective, I always like to see that the person has done what they can to be employed. Personaly I would take a lower paying job so I show continual employment on my resume. Important - note this on your cover letter - " I am working at ABC groceries while looking for work in my field as I would rather be underemployed than not employed" or something like that. It shows gumption and a personality type that employers like.

I wish you the best - keep throwing it at the wall - eventually something will stick - just dont stop throwing
