Eileen,
I was reading past posts and you had posted or answered someone about Angel Food Ministries and their food program.
I went to the site and read. There are lot of them in our area. My brother has been out of work since October when he had neck surgery and his wife is the breadwinner right now. She doesn't make much.... (long story here but God bless her, she is faithful to my brother)...anyway, I'm putting them in touch with this. I looked at the menus and the foods that you could get for the price and the requirements. I urge any of you that need to participate to do so.
These are delicate and hurtful times. If you need help, get it.
I think it's great that we can share resources. I would not have thought about anything like this. Thank you for mentioning it to someone. If anyone else has info on resources, please share.
I found my wicker dresser on CraigsList. Never thought about looking there until someone on OH mentioned it would be a good place to look.

There is also a website I belong to.....it is called Free Cycle. I believe it is nationwide. Rather than throw things out, people list things they have and no longer use on the list and others can "claim" them. No money may be exchanged.
I have given away a small TV, a toaster oven, and have gotten a small bike for our grandson. If people "need" something, they can post it and if someone else has that particular item and wants to get rid of it, well, then..........everyone wins!! Have seen lots and lots of kids clothes go back and forth as well as beds, bed frames, even vegetables that were in abundance this summer.
Hope this helps someone........it has helped us!!!
Hugs to all.............V

Our food editor did a story about Angel Food Ministries; she picked up a monthly package and then made recipes out of what she got. Jaye can make a feast out of anything, I swear! That's how I learned about it. Now, some of the meat is uneven pieces, but Jaye said it was good stuff otherwise, it just looks funny. For $30 for a lot of food, who's gonna complain? I'd do it, but I don't have a big freezer to put the stuff in. But for a family, hey it's ideal. Glad it helps.
I called my sister Becky, you met her, and told her. She was laughing. She was on the phone with a friend who was telling her about it but didn't have the website. I was sending her the website!! She pulled an order online. My brother and his wife are going to order. I may. I have so much in my freezer but it would help my brother out and give them more groceries. They have a 13 yr old son who is a garbage truck.
Amazing what and who our little OFF forum touches, isn't it?

eileen was telling me about it--and anyone who could benefit! the site is awesome- there are no wage requirements! no ID cards needed (they do accept food stamps tho) no voucher or referral needed....we make about $500 a month TOO much for food stamps so we cannot get that kind of help and the angel food thing sounds very nutritious..and the extra pkgs that you can order sound great too! we have to drive about 20-25 miles to get to a location but it would be worth it once a month! i plan on getting food there in december--our freezer was full of venison for so long and it's now gone- and no way to get to wisconsin to replenish!
freecycle on the other hand is great IF you are home to see the postings- so many around here are posted in the early morning while i am at work--but we have scored some wonderful--and some not so -things from there-as well as giving away......there is also a new group around here- not sure where all it encompasses -but it is online- called the ReUseIt Network group...i haven';t used it yet but someone may know more- our freecylce moderator actually turned us on to it!
now- i am looking for a card table--anyone???

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

OPPS! I just found out that my disease of CRS just came to an end for now.
I found out about Angel Food Ministries a couple of months ago. I looked into it for church who is hoping to become a distribution site. They have 3 sites around here and one of them is here in Portage. I go to a Porter church and we need on around there. I haven't heard anything from them and so I need to call them. The office is certainly VERY slow in getting back to people who would like to help them. I have heard that the food is alright from some and others do not like it. I am not sure, all I know is that I hear this. I am wanting to try it to see. I like the idea of having the senior dinners too. For $30 you get 15 or 20 individual senior dinners wrapped and packed from meat and starch to veggies and dessert. That is nice for seniors and can be very helpful for those who don't like to cook for themselves. The web site has a list of the dinners and what they are having. Then there is the extra things that you can order with an order of either the regular package or the senior package. They are really nice sounding.
I belong to Freecycle around here and it is great. I just a large garbage body bag (I call them that since you could get a body in one of them) full of clothes for me to wear right now. They were great. I did get a small bag for Goodwill out of them too. I got a Leather coat from there too. It is really nice but it runs small and so it doesn't fit yet.
I would venture to say to look into the Food Pantry's around where you live also. My church started one about 25 years ago when the local mills were having a lot of problems with lay offs. It is still going strong and is now the "Westchester Neighbors" for the township. They help you out with groceries for 2 weeks. So look into something like that also. My cousin (who was also my Godmother) started the food pantry and it seems like she is in heaven nudging me to start the Angel Food Ministries too. Sounds like Marian. ha ha

I don't know how good the pre-packaged senior meals are but for those that are having portion issues, it might be a good way to get portion-control for awhile and we are at the age where we probably qualify.
There is a company in Dallas that specializes in gourmet portion-control meals for WLS patients. I didn't check it out because I didn't want to pay the price. It was well over $100.
My sister and brother are elated that they can get some help. I wish I could do more for them but I can't afford to pay their bills and mine, too. And just between you and me, I know nicotine is an addiction but if you are low on money, those darned cigarettes are VERY costly. If you can't pay your bills, stop smoking and go crazy like the rest of us when we had to give up something we were addicted to.... like food.
Sorry, I'm pretty hard-hearted when it comes to priorities. I scale back majorly on things. Outside of giving away my first-born, everything else is pretty much expendable.

Yeah, Janet, I agree on the cigarette thing. I once lived in an apartment and the people down the hall were very poor ... they had a very cute little boy (about 7) and occasionally the woman would come down and beg from me for money. I would never give her anything because I knew she would spend it on cigarettes (she was a very heavy smoker). But occasionally, I would give her some milk or bread for the child instead of the money, or some baked goods (like at Christmas), and she appreciated that. (And believe me, this was when I was making about $250 a week, back in the early '80s, so I didn't have a whole lot either.) I just wanted to make sure the kid was getting something, because I knew the parents were spending their welfare checks on cigs instead of food a lot of the times.
