hi there,
ok here is my question for all the nurses out there.
i think we hired a cocain addict.
her eyes are glassy, she is sniffling all the time and cant consentrate.  i have never been around a drug addict and i think this girl is a drug addict.
so what do i do as a shift manager???????

Carla,   I'm no nurse, but I was a HR director for a small company for many years.  As such, I used legal advise whenever we had any questionable employee situations.    It appears that you don't use a pre-employment drug screening process, right?   I don't think you can single out one employee for screening, so it's just your opinion that she may be on drugs (even thought you may be correct).   I had a similar situation with a fork lift driver who smoked pot on his lunch hour.    I chose to watch his performance closely, and was able to dismiss him when I caught him stealing cash.    I suggest you contact the owner or a lawyer to ensure you proceed within the laws of your state.
Good luck.

send her for random drug testing......tell her it is one of the policies and it just comes up every so often and you never know who gets to go and do it.

Carla,

Sounds like it to me.  I've not been around cocaine but I had step kids that did other things... and the glassy, not concentrating is a good sign.. but certainly the sniffing would be a clue.

As a shift manager you go to your superior and give them that monkey.

Maybe she's just got ADD and sinus problems.  I sniff a lot and sometimes have problems concentrating (due to my insomnia) but I'm no cocaine addict.

Carla,

Glassy eyes, along with the sniffling can be a sign of many things. . .  allegies, as to drugs. . .

pot smoking can cause glassy eyes
as well as drinking
are her eyes pinned too?

dope can make someone have glassy eyes and give sniffles. . .

hi Laureen,

We are corporate so i cant send her for a random drug test.

Carla,

So many things. . .  but dope addicts usually have pinned, glassy eyes, another tell tale thing is an incredible sweet tooth.  However, she could also be on legal prescription meds and not taking them in the right manner which could be causing problems, I had a friend who suffered from severe clinical depression and was on different physcyotropic meds, she often forgot whether she had taken them and subsequently took too much, so she appeared to be off kilter (appearance similar to drug addicts, but this woman was no drug addict) and/or possible neuro problems, finally got her to see a doctor, who put her in the hospital, took her off everything and then slowly got her back to where she needed to be.  Just to be safe, I'd say keep your money and belongings safe, if she is a drug addict, sooner or later, she will blow this job due to her addiction. . .  sorry to hear that this might be a problem, but often times all we can do is trust our instincts. . .

Hugs, Laureen

Carla,

Cocaine is tough to beat.  I would definitely have a talk with my supervisor and keep a log of anything funny that she may do.  Maybe they will order a drug test for the entire department.  We used to call in a company that did drug testing for random testing all the time.
