Question for anyone who has had RNY

Hi everyone!

When I met with the nutritionist last week ,she told me that my pouch after RNY would be like a funnel.

For those of you who have already had RNY and are now back on solid food, do you ALWAYS have to chew your food to the consistence of applesauce?     I'm doing this now as part of my diet (well, trying to!) and I'm having a really hard time doing it.  I'm concerned that if this is a BIG part of the entire after RNY surgery process that I won't be able to do it.

Do you always have to chew food so thoroughly that it's like applesauce/mush?

Thanks, Linda

Thanks Marc.

I think now that I'm heading towards the last couple of months of my 6 month diet, I"m getting anxious.  I don't want to fail at this!  After all, I'm changing my body for life!

THE STATEMENT THAT YOU ARE CHANING YOUR BODY FOR LIFE  IS TRUE BUT YOU HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR EATING HABITS FOR LIFE TOO...NEED TO GET THE CONCEPT IN YOUR MIND THAT YOU WILL BE EATING TO LIVE NOT LIVING TO EAT....THE THOUGHT OF FOOD SOMETIMES IS JUST NOT WHAT IT ONCE WAS....SO YES YOUR CHANGEING YOUR BODY FOR LIFE AND THAT COMES WITH RULES AND THINGS YOU CAN AND CANT EAT AND HOW YOU EAT THEM,..I DONT CHEW MY FOOD NOW LIKE I DID BUT WISH I DID SOMETIMES,.

Hi Jan

You are so right.  I am changing my eating habits for life too!    I will work on getting my mind around that one!

When I wrote that post I was thinking more along the line of "im changing my stomach for life"....the size and shape and capacity.

I went to dr. today and I lost 7 lbs last month. This is good news and he can see how Im' changing.

I am working hard on eating the protein first, then veggies and fruit, then starches.   I've been doing this for a couple of months now.     I want to always keep my eyes on the prize!   Thanks for your post and for the reminder!

I was wondering about that too!  I will remember tha narrow path when I get my chance,
which isn't until Jan.23/09

The reason I was wondering is because i tend not to chew too much...just taste and swallow.

Lersson's to be learned thank's    Lola

No, just the early part ... my nutritionist said try remembering the old adage of chewing 30 times for every bite. But early on, you really do want it to be mu**** will go down much easier.

Later on (like six months to a year and later), the 30 times is a good measuring stick. Something everyone, even those who didn't have weight loss surgery, should strive for.

Hi Eileen

I've been using smaller plates and it's amazing how even just doing that is making a difference.

A question for you.... what do people here (and you did in your post to me) not spell out a word completely?   I'm thinking the word you wrote above is 'mush'..but not sure.

30 times.... yikes.   I'm getting a sore jaw, but maybe that's the idea?  ;)

Actually you should chew all your foods to the puree consistency. That is how is was originally, but more and more patients begged docs and such for other foods that they became more lenient and therefore I see more problems happening with people that don't chew.....

Yikes..all my food to puree consistency. I don't know that I have the jaw power for that!

Do you folks use a blender to chop up the food then?
