Have any of you heard of this?

Hi everyone,
I don't know what to do or think, and thought I would see if any of you have any ideas.

I got mail today from my surgeons office. It's a letter stating that since I'm on Medicaid I have to do the six month supervised diet. Which I know and I've been doing it since July. The office sends me the list of Medicaid requirements, I've done all of the required other medical tests. Then it says that the person has to be older than twenty-five, but less than 55. I am 55!

I know that Medicare will pay for surgery, if its done at a Center of Excllence. I've only been on Medicaid since March, so I won't be eligible for Medicare until 3/10.

This just seems so unfair to me...I know its not like I have to pay for it out of pocket, so I probably shouldn't b@#*h. But. I'm going to call the surgeon's office in the morning and see what she knows about this requirement.

I have fibromyalgia and COPD. My hope is that in having surgery that I could get a job again, and not have to rely on disability. It just pi****es me off, and I had to vent!

    I have read where many people have had to jump through unusual hoops to get the surgery done.  I'm sorry you have to face this.  But, you are not alone.  I have seen some remarkable accounts of perseverance to have the surgery.  Of course that doesn't make it easier for you.  I certainly wish you the best and hope the letter is just a formality....  My thoughts are with you....  Millie

Nancy;

I hope that you can show you are already following the diet and won't have to do it for another 6 months. I too have fibro, so I know what you go through (it's really hell, isn't it?) I'm glad you chose life instead of the wheelchair (that's what my pain doc told me ... if I didn't do something to lose weight, I'd wind up in a wheelchair ... so I chose life. I still may end up in a wheelchair the way my knee replacement has not turned out so well, but at least I'll be 180 pounds lighter ... I'm not 347 pounds anymore ... I'm 170!)

Hi,

Millie, you're right I know people do have to jump thru hoops to have this surgery. I never understand their's either.

Eileen, I knew you had fibro too. And it does suck! I'm afraid without surgery, I will end up about #400 in a wheelchair...that's where I'm headed! My doctor's office is doing a good job of keeping records, they must not send them every month though. I will ask them to send the ones we have so far.

Thank guys, I needed to know I'm not alone with this.
Nancy
