CHEWING

I KNOW WE HAVE TO CHEW FOODS SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE SWALLOWING.  I DO HAVE ONE PROBLEM, MY BITE IS A LITTLE OFF AND IT MAKES IT HARD TO CHEW VERY LONG.  DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS PROBLEM?  PLEASE ADVICE.

THANKS,
JOY

Don't have this problem, but I do cut my food into smaller sized pieces. I also use salad sized plates which helps me with portion control, even almost 4 years post-op. Good luck.

I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. I HAVE TO CUT MY FOOD INTO SMALL PIECES BECAUSE LARGER PIECES WILL CHOKE ME BUT, I AM UNABLE TO MAKE IT "MUSHY".  I COULD BE WORRYING ABOUT NOTHING BUT THE THOUGHT OF HAVING PAIN DUE TO NOT CHEWING ENOUGH IS A CONCERN FOR ME.  THANKS.

Maybe you could use a blender or Magic Bullet to much things up a bit first.  I'm about 2 months out and have learned (am learning) the hard way that I can't take a bite much bigger than a peanut and have to chew it to death!

I HAD THAT IN MY MIND ALSO.  I THINK I CAN HANDLE THAT, LOL :)  I ALWAYS REMIND MYSELF THAT I WILL HAVE A NEW BABY TUMMY SO, HAVE TO EAT LIKE A BABY FOR WHILE.  THANK YOU FOR TALKING WITH ME.

Joy,

The chewing part is very important and you will find out first hand why, if you don't, so yes, cut the pieces small, try counting to 25 while you chew each piece.  Though according to your avatar your surgery is not scheduled until next week and I believe initially, though all surgeons have different post-op rules, the initial stage after surgery has you on liquids and it is a few weeks at least until you have to worry about chewing, however, never too early to begin practicing ;)

Best wishes, Laureen

YES, I HAVE MY SURGERY THIS COMING MONDAY.  I AM VERY EXCITED.  I WAS JUST CONCERNED BECAUSE MY JAWS ARE NOT ALIGNED EVENLY AND WHEN I EAT, IT DOES NOT GET MUSHY.  SMALL PIECES BUT NOT MUSHY.  I HAVE BEEN PRACTICING AND HOPE I AM ABLE TO PREVENT STOMACH PAIN.  THANKS FOR WRITING TO ME!

Good luck with your surgery and I think you'll be fine.  I'm 3 years post-op and still drink protein shakes to get in enough protein.  Have you looked into any protein powders, or ready-to-drink protein  drinks?  At first, you'll be on liquids anyway -- then you can eat things like yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. - just try to get in enough protein.

Congrats on your upcoming surgery on Monday!!

You will do just fine. Just concentrate on chewing and do the best you can. You may have to puree your food for awhile until your pouch has healed.

I worry about the same thing. I have braces on top and bottom . After an adjustment I can't chew at all for a few days. I am doing the two week liquid diet and will be on them for a few weeks after I suspect. I have even thought about baby food.
