Never going back to my primary care physician!

I went to see my PCP today because there's an issue with my left knee... pain, etc.  I don't know if it's arthritis, I had surgery on it about 8 years ago.  Anyway I haven't seen her for a while because of everything going on with the surgery.  So after making me wait 55 minutes from the time of my appointment the first words out of her mouth were "Why the disappointing weight loss? and "What does Dr. Engstrand have to say about it?"  First of all... not congrats! No way to go?!  No hi how are you?  NOTHING.  Nothing positive to say!!!  I said hey, I walked out of the hospital weighing 243.  Today I weigh 223.  It's not even a month since my surgery, I think 20 pounds is pretty good.  She acted really wonky after that.  I hope she felt sheepish.  I have had other experiences with her... one time I was there and it was during a blue period because of some stuff I was going through with my daughter and I told her I felt depressed and her response was "suck it up.  If you still feel that way in 3 months then we'll talk about it."  She's made me feel bad other times when blood tests were not what she thought they should be, etc.  So I am cancelling my future appointments with her and finding myself a new PCP... I may even write a letter to the head of the HMO about her but I'll wait until I cool off and then decide.  You know she had no business spouting of about my weight when that is now between me and my surgeon and I was there about my KNEE.  grrrrrr!!!!

Thanks for letting me vent!

wow- i don't blame you-except-she really does have business talking about your weight if you think about the whole body concept--she just should have been more positive--why -WHY do ppl think we have surgery and boom 100# is gone in a week?????

and that suck it up comment was wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyhow- sorry you are having a bad day!!!!!!!!!! i can relate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
here's a hug....

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

I don't blame you either for being upset!

20 pounds in a month is excellent!  I just hope I am able to say that when Oct. 29th come around.  Only have a few days to go, and I am 4 pounds from there.!!  Oh, I know, I'm not supposed to focus on the weight, at least that is what my surgeon says, but that is hard.

Vent whenever you need to!

She hasn't been involved with my weight since February when I started going to a different doctor for the weight loss plus the numerous tests in prep for the RNY surgery.  So that was a subject that could have been left alone at this point and her first questions should have been about why I was there today (i.e. my knee which she did know), not just jumping on me about what she thought about my weight.

You really may want to think about getting a different Dr.

Laura....I would be mad too. Not so much if she just talked about the weight loss but it was the way she said it. That was totally inappropriate. The "suck it up" comment should be addressed with someone higher up. That was way out of line!!

Hope your day gets better.

Hi Laura D,

I'd be po'd too. Best advice is to vote with your feet, I recently had to with a Doctor I had been seeing for over 16 years.  Her lack of professionalism is appalling!

HI Laura,

That doesn't sound like a very positive experience for you with your PCP.  There are too many doctors out there to have to deal with one you aren't comfortable with.  I think you are doing GREAT with your weightloss so don't let them get you down one little bit!

Hope you find a doctor you can trust and build a positive relationship with.  It's great you "vented" with us here on OFF.

Laura,
YOur dr and my dr just HAVE to be related!  When I told my dr I was having wls she reacted in much the same way.  She said "Well, what are you going to do when you lose all your hair, have to have b12 shots for the rest of your life, and regain all the wt you lose plus more?"

Geezzzzzz!  What is it with these drs anyway?  We both need new drs.

BTW - how's the knee?
Hugs! Donna L (finding_me) - I just know I'm here somewhere...

Thanks everyone for the supportive comments.    I was in such a great mood before I saw her.  Well anyway, I cancelled my future appointments with her and when the time comes, I'll look for a new PCP.
