I used to live in Phoenix and I know you don't go on daylight savings time but I'm not sure why.  I think there is another state that is the same.

Here is a better answer.  The other states that don't go on DST are Indiana and Hawaii.

Why doesn't Arizona use daylight savings time?

I just noticed that Arizona doesn't spring forward or fall back, why is that?

You'll hear lots of different answers, such as "They're just weird," or "They think it's a Communist idea," or whatever.

There is a more practical answer. The main reason for Daylight Saving Time is to save energy. This is accomplished by adjusting clocks so that sunset occurs one hour later in the day. This provides extra sunlight in the evening when people are active at home, out shopping, or engaged in outdoor recreation. Thus they use less electricity by not using artificial lights.

In Arizona, where it's very hot in the summer, they consume a lot of electricity to run the air conditioners. Air conditioners use a LOT more electricity than light bulbs. So, in Arizona they prefer to have sunset earlier. Although it is darker when people are active in the evening, it's also cooler at this time. So air conditioning is used less, and this saves more energy than would be saved by not using artificial lights.

It's also very hot in Nevada, and Nevada DOES change to Daylight Saving Time. During the evening hours, more electricity is used in Nevada than in Arizona on air conditioning, which demonstrates why Daylight Saving Time is not such a good idea in hot climates. However, Nevada does not opt out of Daylight Saving Time like Arizona does because it creates too many bizarre time differences with its neighbor states.
