 Jean,

I buy the packages of thin sliced beef... in a plastic bag in the luncheon meat section.  I make a gravy and add to it.  Buddig is the brand name we use....  (west coast)  Not sure you can find it everywhere.  I also used hamburger and or sausage and made gravy.....  Not exactly a diet food but one of those comfort foods.  I make it for mom once in a while.  We O.D. on the shwann.. before surgery... sigh, twas goooood.

Jean, did you bring back happy memories to me when you brought this up. We use to have this for dinner when I was a kid. It is the only thing that Dad would eat from Army days. Dad always called it SOS and then Mom would just say "Merle!" to tell him to knock it off around my sister and I.

I made it a few times and used the bagged meat, Buddig was the brand that I used too. But when I was a kid it was the jarred meat that Mom would use. I don't think there is as much sodium in the bagged but I might be wrong. I am "mistaken" at times but never wrong~I was mistaken when I said I might be wrong in the other sentence. ha ha

Thanks for the walk down memory lane this evening. It was fun remembering.

Yes, you can buy the Creamed Chipped Beef in the Freezer section of the supermarket it is made by Stoufer's and the package has 2 servings in it. VERY Good. I add a touch of margarine or butter which ever I have and it is very , very soothing to the pouch when I was 1-2 months out

If I could have grits or mashed potatos that would be so good over them. Toast is out of the question.
I used to make it from scratch for my kids once in a while. I used mushroom soup and ground beef and added a little celery salt. They loved it over bisquits. Could add onions and garlic for a gourmet flavor I suppose.

My mom used to make this all the time.  She just used hamburger, then added flour and milk to make the gravy and served it on bread like an open face sandwich.  And we had mashed potatoes with it. That is the kind of meals you had when there was a big family.

Mickey...

Your recipe is exactly what my mother and granmother would make for my brother and I.  My Brother loved it so much that had my Grandmother teach him how to make it  so that he could make it when he had his first appartment at 19.

Ahh... food memories...

On the topic of food memories.... I ate my lifetime supply of Top Raman while I was in college.
