How Long Did You Stay Home From Work??

I need some advice. I teach in a college and am standing for fairly long periods at a time, but no physical labor. Now the college has informed me that if I taKe more than 2 weeks off from work, it throws me into a special sick leave pool and I am not sure how that will affect my pay because I don't know how much time to tell them I will be out. I am 59 and having the RNY on Nov 4th. I would like to know how long some of you took off and if you wish you had taken more time off. Any advice you can give would be appreciated.

I took three weeks off, but I sit at a desk ... if you work at a college, you must get time off for a Thanksgiving break, right? If you are having the lap rny, I found two weeks to be sufficient, other than I was fatigued ... I had a little problem at two weeks with a minor infection that required some liquid antibiotics that made me sick, otherwise I was OK most of the time. And I wouldn't have been nearly as tired if I didn't have to get up at 3-4 in the morning for work (not a morning person). Actually, after two weeks I started to get some energy back ****il the antibiotics). It all depends on how quickly you heal, if you suspectible to infection and how peppy you are (sometimes I'm not). If you have any other questions, please e-mail me. I'll be happy to answer.

Thanks so much for your help. I am having the RNY and was hoping to incorporate the Thanksgiving break into my time off. I will definately write to you with other questions.

If everything goes smoothly I would say 2-3 weeks off.  However because your job requires you to stand for long periods of time maybe going back to work part time for a couple of weeks would be something to consider.  I was off for a month but I had other medical issues to resolve before returning to work.  I think how fast you recover will depend a lot on your physical condition prior to surgery.  Be sure to let us know how things go.

I had surgery on Tuesday, came home Thursday night and began working from home on Monday - a few hours a day building to 7 or 8. I didn't go back into the office for three weeks though; I really could have used a 4th week but didn't feel I could take it.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for your response. I am thinking I should definately ask for three weeks and if I need a fourth-take it. I would hate to be ill in front of a classroom. I appreciate your advice.

I had my surgery on Dec 13 and was back to work Dec 20th.

I was in the hospital until Dec 18 due to no poo poo.  Finally went, then got to go.

That night I stayed up on the computer all night.  On purpose.  I work overnights and wanted to maintain the same schedule (I did that in the hospital too.).

Doctor's appointment on Dec 19, he said to take 2 more weeks off.  I told him I had stayed up all night on the computer - the same thing I do at work overnight.  So he said go back when I want.  December 20th - working.  That was a Thursday.  Friday and Saturday worked my part time job (Friday and Saturday are my off days full time).  Sunday I worked full time job.  Monday and Tuesday part time was closed, worked full time.  Back to both on Wednesday.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!

i went back after three weeks to a desk job was really ready after two weeks

i think if you rest in between classes you should be OK and at least you will have turkey day holiday shortly after.

i would look into a stool or is there a desk in the room you can lean on??

if your not sure, i would opt for a little extra time, i dont think you would be "sick" in the room, but you sure might be tired.

good luck with your surgery

be safe and well, jacki

I had my lap RNY on Nov 7 and went back to work [desk job] the Monday after Thanksgiving that year. I felt good enough to go back a week or so sooner but it didn't make sense to go back T'giving week for just a few days. For me, it was nice to be able to nap if I needed to, staying home that bit longer. But I felt good after about 2 1/2 weeks, going shopping for hours for the first time in years, standing in line at a book signing for the first time EVER, all within the first 3 weeks.

Good luck, Mary!
