Heel pain....
It sounds like plantar fascitis (sp?) .
Alice Hi, the last month I've been experiencing heel pain in one foot. I may end up seeing an podiatrist but any home remedies would be appreciated. I taped my foot at the arch for several days and that helped. I can currently take anti-inflammatory meds cuz I'm still pre-op but post-op I won't be able to. I've seen the ads about arch supports...the ones in the stores don't help but I really don't want to invest in an expensive arch support if it's not going to work. Any suggestions would be a big help. I wear Berkenstoks at work and similar sandals at home.

Yup, that's what it sounds like, one of the things would be not wearing totally flat shoes, that is what the podiatrist told me when I suffered from that a few years back and you can try the arch supports, they may help some.
Hope you feel better soon. Laureen

After a summer in sandals, even Birks, and bare feet my feet start to bother me. Sometimes the heal, other times the ball of the foot or the arch I get out my best pair of tennis shoes and wear them constantly for a couple of weeks. That usually does the trick for me. I have (or had) a high arch and I think as we get older it gets a bit weak. Of course years of obestiy I'm sure didn't help. The podiatrist says that I have a lot of "stress" fractures in my feet. Nothing to do about it. Something like 200 plus bones in the feet I believe. Good luck! I love a good foot rubbing with lotion. I do it myself but nothing quite like having someone else do it . . . .I used to pay my son a quarter and it was good for 20 minute rub with lotion. . . Many many years ago!!

I think plantar fascitis is the same as heel spur? If this is correct, here's an exercise my Doctor gave me:
Stand on the first step of a set of stairs (hold on so you don't fall), with only your toes & a little bit of the ball of the foot on the stair. Then slowly raise up and then down. Repeat. This helped me. It eventually went away on its own for me. Here is a link for more exercises to help: http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/exercises-to-reduce-plant ar-fasciitis

Alice,
I saw a Podiatrist for the same problem a few years ago. He taped me up, gave a couple of injections (can't recall what it was), and told me to get rid of my Birks and start wearing a GOOD lace-up shoe. YUCK - my feet don't like lace-ups but I'll admit it helped.
The exercise Jan mentioned were part of my routine too.
Feel better.

I have "morton's pneuroma" in both feet, (so a podiatrist told me a couple years ago). Then I moved and haven't gotten one here. But the one in the left foot is especially painful sometimes the pain radiates all the way up the calf of that leg and keeps me up at night. I know I need to go to a podiatrist but having just had bariatric surgery I dont' think I can take any more time off from my job.

Hi Alice,
I had heel pain but it was not plantar fascitis (sp??) it was heel spurs. I had 6 of them that looked like rooster spurs.... Ouch!! I could hardly walk and ended up having surgery.... and now they are back!!! My doctor recommened that I take additional calcium because it can help reduce the size of the spurs. I have been taking the calcium citrate and it seems to be helping. They are no longer painful anyway. The exercise that Jan mentioned was given to me also for the spurs. I will do anything to avoid the surgery again. I had some problems with my surgery that I surely do not want to repeat.

I wear New Balance shoes all the time.
I don't think Birkenstocks are the best things for your feet. I have a couple pair but if I wear them too much I end up hurting.
I had foot surgery on my right foor for heel spurs quite a few years ago. But it does return, so I wouldn't suggest surgery.
Most Dr's will do what you did, put a pad around your heel and tape it, but that is a pain also.
On my right foot where I had the surgery, I now have a detiorating (SP) ankle. Arthritis mostly. Not sure if it is surgery related. But I just stick to my New Balance shoes because they give the most support.
Not sure if this helps you any.
