What is KASHI?

Stupid question # 1.  What is kashi?  I read where people put it in their yogurt.
Stupid question # 2.  When people say they eat chili, is that w/o beans ?

I have not met with my nutritionist yet (Oct. 22nd) and I am sure she will answer these questions
for me but I thought I would ask my friends on OFF first.

I find myself on this forum more and more trying to get "educated" before my surgery Nov. 19th

I am so glad I found this site and so much enjoy reading everyone's blogs and profiles.  Knowing I will get love and support from all of you makes things so much "gooder".  :-)

Love, Sandy

Hi, Kashi is a high fiber, protein cereal. I make a parfait with sf,ff yogurt, fresh fruit and Kashi. It has 9 gms of protein per cup. It tastes wonderful.
I eat chili with beans because the hamburger and beans are good sources of protein. Good luck on your surgery day. Mona

Sandy,
Mona gave the answer already.
I'll add another comment - no question is stupid. We learn so much from each other.
When you decide to try Kashi, check the labels. It is not all the same. I eat the KASHI GO LEAN, which has a higher protein content than the Kashi Go Lean Crunch. The Crunch tasted better to me but I couldn't keep my hands out of the box - it was too yummy to be in my house. Lack of self control on my part. Shame on me but that is my way of keeping away from tempting foods. Not in the house, means not in my mouth.

Good luck with your surgery. Keep asking those questions. One of us will have an answer.

I made a pot of turkey chili the other day and added beans, it was great!

Thank you everyone for your answers to my questions.  I love chili and my husband and son say I make the "BEST".....Aren't they sweet though?  I also love beans of all kinds and make a mean 12 bean soup (for down the road later of course)  I know beans are high in protein and fiber but also high in gas for some people.   I will surely try making the turkey chili one day later on also. I realize that I can still cook the favorite things for my husband and I can have some but in smaller portions.  I am learning so much from reading all your good suggestions on meals and I am learning about foods I had never heard of.   I have already stocked up on things that I will be able to have after surgery.  They are all tucked away on shelves in my pantry ....just waiting for me!!
It is starting to get colder here in ND and they are forecasting a storm watch for this weekend. It has already started snowing west of us in eastern Montana and they say is coming our way.
Fall is my favorite season and it is so beautiful all ready with the trees turning orange and red.  It is especially beautiful south of us in the Badlands.
I hope everyone has a good weekend and thanks for the advise.  I'm sure I'll be asking a whole lot more questions now and after my surgery in November.

Love, Sandy

P.S.  My grand daughter inserted a couple pictures of me on my profile so you can put a face to the name now.  Next time she comes over I'll have her put one in my avatar.

I made a pot of chili tonite and it WAS great!!  I made mine with half hamburger and half ground turkey, and two cans of beans.  It was DELICIOUS and VERY FILLING!!!!  I have a bumch to back to eat this week.  I could only eat 1/2 cup for dinner...gotta love THAT!!  Glad your chili worked for you. (yummy)

I think chili is a wonderful invention! Glad you can enjoy it too, Cara.  Yes, 1/2 cup is my serving too, but I feel so satisfied.

There are only 2 of us here so I made 1/2 the recipe.

I haven't tried beef yet but will one of these days.

I have some pork chops (very lean) in the freezer and was thinking about cooking them in the George Foreman grill tomorrow.  We will see how that goes.

have a great day!

Hi Sandy.
1. I eat Kashi GoLean, the high protein, high fiber version of Kashi, on top of my yogurt every weekday morning. Alone, it tastes like cardboard. But it is so yummy on yogurt with a splash of cinnamon mixed in Splenda. As Annette said, there are a lot of different cereals under the Kashi brand with a lot more sugar - beware. Kashi GoLean is what I use.

Also I make a mean Kashi crumb pie crust for my sugar free pudding pies. My family loves them. Instead of graham cracker crusts, I process Kashi GoLean in the food processor until it is crumbs, add my favorite cinnamon/Splenda mix for a little flavor, and a little Can't Believe It's Not Butter Liquid [zero calories] instead of melted butter to make the crumbs sticky; then just press into a pie plate, fill with your favorite sf pudding [I add protein powder to the pudding, too], and you've got a wonderful protein treat with fewer bad carbs, fewer calories, and less fat than a reduced fat graham cracker crust.

2. Postop I ate chili without beans just because of the soft food restrictions in my program. However, my nut was a big fan of beans as a source of good carbs and protein so when I could tolerate them, I ate chili with beans, beans on salads, etc, etc. She loved it when I started adding garbanzos to my salads.

Of course, follow what your nut tells you. One thing you'll find listening to all of us is that different programs have somewhat different rules and different timing on when you can start eating certain kinds of food. Do what your program advocates. We're all ultimately successful!
