Good luck with the job interview. It's hard getting back into the job market at our age. I'm afraid it might happen to me, too, and in the newspaper business, that's not going to be easy. Hope things work out for you.

Aloha George and all my OFF family,

It is so good to be back at my computer early in the morning with all of you after a couple weeks of computer problems. I'm now typing away on a reconditioned Mac, two years old vs. my old one...5 years old (an antique!). I've learned a lot over the past couple of weeks about computers, and am learning more all the time.

The day is just beginning....still gray outside, but I hear the mynas loudly chattering which means they are greeting the day for us. Someone spotted the first humpback whale of the season down near Lahaina yesterday and we all were so thrilled. Each year we wait for their return, and the first sighting is always front page news. I imagine in my mind that hundreds of them are in a long line from Alaska ........steadily swimming back to Maui where they will mate, have their babies and delight us with their antics for several months. I LOVE IT!

This is my one day off in the past week...I've been needed at the agency where I work and have appreciated the work in this crazy up and down financial world we are experiencing. These days every dollar helps and I am grateful for having this little part time job. Tomorrow (Sat.) is my regular day at the hospital screening the newborn babies' hearing....and I love that day. It is my "renewal". I get to see new life in abundance and to feel the hope and happiness that goes along with new babies. It can lift me out of the darkest mood.

Soon the sun will pop over the top of Haleakela and be blindingly bright because it's now coming directly into my living room. I don't have drapes because I love the light, but my windows are tinted thankfully ....otherwise I would not be able to stand it in there. I love the morning sun...and by 9:00 or 10:00, it is nice and cool out on my lanai as the sun passes overhead.

I'm off to have my car serviced, and to do errands. I am so happy to be back with my OFF family for morning coffee. I hope everyone has something wonderful happen to them today.

Aloha nui loa,

Maui Karen

Karen,
I was just reading your delightful post and imagining all that you describe.  I've never been on Maui when the humpbacks are there.  Just now an Hawaiian song comes on the radio and if it weren't for the impending surgery I think I'd be booking my trip today.
Aloha, Carmel Valley Linda

Hi George and my OFF family:

It is such a beautiful autumn day in West Michigan. The sky is so blue and the sun is blazing, the leaves are changing. I'm so tired but happy to have four days off, no work to bother my mind. And just getting ready for Frankenmuth. Wish Carla was getting here earlier but happy I don't have to drive!

I had a busy day yesterday. Had my therapist's appointment ... complained about my knee a lot, then we talked about me getting rid of some of my junk, selling it on eBay. I really need to do that. I could maybe make some money with some of my bobbleheads. It's just which ones do I really want to get rid of. And I don't have the boxes for any of them, so some will have lost value. It's hard to part with some of my treasures.

Work was very busy ... I had two extra pages to do instead of just one because we're shorthanded on Fridays because someone from days has to work on the night shift because of the morning paper on Saturday. Plus, I won't be there, so that's an extra position they need to fill. So I also had to do a review. Wasn't really bad, just very busy, not much time to put my knee up and rest, so I was very sore by the end of the night.

Wearing this hinged brace is a pain, and I've come to a decision, told my brother Gary about it ... not going to go to Williamsburg next April unless my knee is much better. Too much walking there and I wouldn't be very comfortable doing that much walking the way my knee is feeling. And that really ****** me off ... I didn't have weight loss surgery and knee replacement to be stuck wearing a brace and using a cane and not being able to do the walking and live the life I want to live. I am not happy with my orthopedic docs right now. When I see ortho doc No. 2 in two weeks (for another follow-up), I'm going to let him know how I feel in no uncertain terms. They messed up ... they didn't do something right with the tendons/ligaments in the surgery; they didn't catch whatever injury I had when I fell in February (and I signed a waiver with the building's management company already). They promised me that I would be able to do "normal things" when I had this knee replacement, and I'm not ... either they're going to fix it, or I'm going to find someone more competent, and I don't care if this ortho doc No. 2 is the supposed best doctor in Grand Rapids. He didn't operate on me so I don't know. But he sure isn't treating me very well.

Well, I need to get my butt in gear and shower, pack and make apple muffins for the gang. I also have some apple bread I need to slice and package. I'm so tired ... really sleepy ... my friend Mary Kay woke me up this morning (not really early, 10:30, but still, early for me).

Frankenmuth, here we come!

Hi George and Everyone,

I, too, continue to keep Aime and her family in my thoughts and prayers.

I also hope everyone has a fabulous time in Frankenmuth!  I have no doubt they will.

Busy day at work today.  I came in extra early and have been busy since the moment I got here.  Taking a break here on OFF.  My daughter called from their first visit to the little town they will be moving to.  She really likes it so I'm pleased.  They recognize the risk in moving with today's economy in such turmoil but feel they have no choice but to go for it.  All I can offer is support but wish I could see the future.  Can't do that.

It's a three-day weekend for me as I am off for Columbus Day.  I'm looking forward to the mental break!

Hope you all have a great Friday.  Joan - it's great to see you posting again.

HUGGS AND SAFE TRAVELS TO ALL In FRANKENMUTH !! We are with you in spirit and don't hold back any details!!
I am at the library, there hasn't been a minute to post from work. After 7 years of working together my boss has lost her bean. For the first 2 years we had connecting offices  but then SHE wanted to move because she wasn't in the same hall as the other managers, boo hoo. So we moved into the managers hall but have shared an office. I have noticed lately that she has been is a foul mood. Yesterday the ~~ hit the fan. She has fumed for the last year that she is the only one sharing an office and the other managers have bigger offices than we do ( HELLO, She Chose This !) Now yesterday she said I have to move, that she has never believed that "sunordinates "should share an office with managers. Again SHE chose this. She said she gets lots of work done when I am not there( well the same goes for me when she isnt there) Plus she said I only work 4 hours a day and she has to listen to my personal phone calls. and there is no reason for that, This is the lady who talks to her kids, husband, pharmacy, insurance man, and every committee member of every committee she is involved in ( and there are many) Plus her cataloug orders, man who is painting her house etc. etc. When and if I get a call from my mom or daughter I am ALWAYS doing my work while talking and make it quick. We have a very loose office with people in and out, showing off their new shoes or recipes. I get to move into a CLOSET, yes a CLOSET. Fine flippen fine.  Well I onlyhave 5 minutes left and they will shut down my puter so I guess My rant had better be over..Have a good wekend, I know I am going too. Close the door, turn off the phone and be alone!! Blessings

Jean, When you have lemons make lemonade. I think I'd rather live in a shoebox that share a space with that grouch.  Make your "closet" the cutest darn closet you can. And. . . . you fit in a closet now when you sure wouldn't have before WLS.  Just think. . . What all can you do to that little space to make it totally yours. One thing nice. . . . you won't have room for the grouch to come in and sit down!! Let's see, a mural of a lighthouse on one wall, the sea on another, and a Thomas Kincade print on the third. . . .
