28 More Days and Now I am REALLY Scared! TOO OLD??

I haven't posted much because my surgery seemed so far off, but I have been reading a lot of peoples stories and comments and problems, and now it is almost here for me and I AM SCARED. I will be 60 (gasp) in 4 months. Did I wait to late to have this surgery? Will I heal OK? Will I like my life after it? Is anyone else on here close to my age and how was your experience? Would you do it again? I have been so positive and excited and now I am just worried. I am having the bypass. How long were you all out of work? I teach, but do have to walk a lot. I guess one of my biggest fears is not being strong enough to stand in front of a college class and lecture for 2 hours.(That, or puking in front of them.) Please give me the good, bad and ugly. I really hope there is more good, but I want to know what to expect at my age. Is it normal to get frightened and worried towards the end?

You are not to old. There are others on here older than you including me.  I will be 61 on the 13th and am having my surgery tomorrow morning.  Yes I am very nervous and a little scared, but have faith in my surgeon and have heard alot of good revues on him.  I am also looking forward to getting healthier than I am now.  I work as a bank teller and also am concerned about the puking etc. but we will have to be extra careful about chewing our food and make sure we don't overeat.  Follow directions and we should be okay. Best of luck to you.

Cheryl

Hi Mary,
I was 68 1/2 when I had my RNY.....I got along just great. Went back to work in 2 1/2 weeks....you will be tired and need naps for the first couple weeks, but the energy and strength will eventually come back better than ever.

Good luck,
Pat R.

Thanks, Pat. You look great! I was thinking about the same amount of time to be off from work. That should run right into my end of semester so I will have a few more days there.

Pat-
I read on another post that you were hypothyroid and could not have soy. Why? I am hypothroid and have recently been drinking silk because I thought it was better for me. Please explain.

From what I have read, soy products will cause your thyroid medicine to NOT work correctly.....I never knew this either.....also, peanuts/peanut butter is not good for us folks who have low thyroid. It's a shame our docs don't tell us this, or maybe it's something that has just
come to the light.

I drink fat free skim milk. It's what a person gets used to
I guess.

Hi Mary
I am pretty new here too . I had RNY 5 years ago in Nov and sometimes I cant remember when I weighed 116 lbs more .
The first 2 months for me were HARD.  I had a tough time eating a tablespoon full and letting that be it . I couldnt wrap my mind around that . I threw up alot ,,,,that is what happens when i have one bite to much or the wrong thing..:)
At the end of the second month something magical happened and all had been great since.
I take my vitamins and Citracal with D and multi vits EVERYDAY along with a sub-linguil B-12 2500 that i get at Walmart ...All my labs are terrific and have been since I started this journey.
I never did the protein drinks or bars , always get my protein from food and cheese and eggs etc as my Dr prefers that .. I do too as I hate all the other stuff that I tried .
I was out of work for 2 weeks , had the lap RNY and was SCARED TO DEATH the weeks leading up to surgery .
I prayed alot and read alot and researched my DR thoroughly to make sure he was good at that surgery.
I will pray for you and think happy thoughts for you on your day ...YOU WILL BE GREAT and skinny wishes are coming your way..
Hugs
Shirley
