Hi Everyone,
I hope you are all well, and losing. I am having my consult next week and I am very excited, only problem when I spoke to the insurance co. they said I would have to do a 6month supervised diet first. Now this seems silly, if I could diet why would I have the surgery. Then if I do it and lose to much I can't have the surgery. Help any input here. Did anyone have this problem. I did go to Weigh****chers last year for about 6 months and lost and of course gained it back, but I don't have any documentation of this. Well, have a good night

Gail:

I don't know what kind of insurance you have but that doesn't sound very reasonable to me.  When you have your consult, be sure and ask your Surgeon about it.

Blessings,

I have PA BC/BS First Priority Life---yes, there was a 6 month supervised diet...I had YEARS of documented diets that I had tried and failed--no matter.  The 6 months absolutely flew by.  In fact, it was more like 9 months because I wanted my surgeon, no one else in the department...  The six months were all part of the evaluation, testing and observation of commitment --- not just to the surgery, but to an entirely new life and new relationship with food.  Of course, during that time, all the pre-op medical and psych testing was done and lots of counseling with my NUT.  It was all worth it!!!!  Best of luck in your journey!

I have Cigna from FedEx and I too have to jump thru the hoop of 6 months of physician meetings. I have to go every 29 days. Even my physician says it is stupid, but we go through the motions. 1-I think they want to make sure you are committed and 2-if you can lose a lot of weight they would wonder why to pay for surgery. My dr told me just to do what I normally do and not worry about losing more than just a few pounds.

I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield-Anthem here in Virginia, and was very glad they didn't have this rule.

More and more insurance companies are requiring at least 6 month medically supervised diets. They aren't so interested that you lose they just don't want you to gain. You need to prove you have willpower to maintain and can follow rules.
They also hope this will cause people to give up....thus they don't have to pay! Hang in there...it is so worth it!!
6 months will fly by....good luck!!

Sometimes if you have seen a doctor in the past and can account for the time it will be accepted..

Darlene is right.  My doc noted that I had been on diets with him as my PCP for the better part of 5 years, with limited success.  They accepted it with no problem.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!
