Cruising....
Hi Folks!
Any suggestions for coping with the feeding frenzy on a two week cruise? I know...I know...what a hardship to have to go on a cruise! It's a family thing so my 83-year-old father and his main squeeze, 71, will be there as well as other relatives. I have asked for permission to have alcohol at 7 months out as I may need it to be NICE for two weeks - LOL.

Hi Cely. Just remember to eat the protein first and drink plenty of water. Watch out for the alcohol...I get instantly, incredibly drunk on a few sips and then half hour later I am stone sober...it is hardly worth the calories. If you do go crazy and have to dump...scope out the nearest restrooms to where ever you are.... have a wonderful trip. Where is the ship cruising to? Diane
No matter what a person's past may have been, their future is spotless. Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain!!
Ya know, I have been on two cruises since my surgery; I ate a lot but only three times a day, and since those ships are so big, I was always walking so much that I wound up losing weight. I also limited myself to one alcoholic drink a day (a beer or wine, sometimes a pina colada, but that's about all I like) ... as Diane said, you will get drunk faster. I really drink my alcoholic drinks much more slowly than I used to because of that and usually try to eat something with them.
So here's my advice: Make sure to eat breakfast; get in your protein first, there's going to be good protein like eggs, plus lots of fresh fruit, which is good. You know how to make good choices. There are also lots of goodies, like desserts, but most of these cruises also have sugar-free items on the menus now if you want to have something special. Drink lots of water during the day. I basically just had my three meals and a snack. Some people I know took along protein bars or some protein drink mix; I'm not much on the protein drinks, but I took along a couple of bars just in case, and they came in handy on days when you're on excursions and not near any good healthy snacks. I was never one to hit the midnight buffets anyway; I was always too full from dinner and too tired from the day's activities to stay up that late (yeah, I know, me the night owl!). If you do go to the buffet and want something, stick to the cheese and fruit. You know what foods are good for you.
I was amazed that I lost weight on each of these cruises because I ate so much, but, like I said, I did a lot of walking and wasn't snacking as much as I usually do when I'm sitting at home watching TV in my recliner. It's a lesson to learn!
Have fun!

This is long, but I hope it helps
We took a cruise to Alaska in June, and I was 6 months out. I won't say it was a breeze, but with a little planning, and making sure you're NEVER starved by mealtime helps. Neither my husband nor I drink alcohol, so that was never an issue. We just made sure to walk on the other side of the ship from the ice cream bar!!
The best rule of thumb for a buffet is, if you can eat it or get it to eat at home, it's nothing special, pass it by, or have a bite and leave it. The things that tempted me were the things I couldn't get, make, or find at home.
We always had coffee and melon delivered to the room before we got up and out. I ate a protein bar with it. (Special K 90 cal)
B'fast was the buffet; choices of protein, fruits, cereals, meats, and of course the required pastry.
Lunch We were off ship most times, so we found buffet-style places or ordered 1 meal and 1 salad off a menu and shared it. I had little bags of peanuts, "to-go" packets of drink mix (everywhere you go, there is bottled water) Special K 90 cal. protein bars, and s/f hard candy in my back pack at all times.
Supper was a trip. I had whatever they were serving, but told the waiter to put an amount on my plate that would be enough for a 4 year old. At first, he was all upset when I told him that, (insult to the chef and all that malarky) but once I told him I had surgery and too much food would make me sick, he made sure my plate was just the way I asked for it. I ate the protein first, and a taste of carb, a taste of veggie, and I was a happy sailer. The two formal nights we had onboard were the best.... showing up in glam outits that I could never have worn 6 months ago.
And yes, I did have a treat every now and again. I'm not saying it was the smartest choice I could have made, and I'm not condoning or recommending it. Sometimes I paid for it right away with the dump, but I definitely paid for it when I got home, because it was tough to get out of the "wanting something special just because' cycle.
There is so much to do, and so much walking on a cruise, your mind is not always on food like it used to be. Just be careful, because the old habits are never far from the front of our brains, and we need to be stronger than they are. Have a GREAT time, show off that new bod, and tell us all about it when you get home.!!
