I think I'm in the right place now over 50 I'm 58
Hi,
My name is Gail, and I am from Pa. I want to get WLS and have just begun the process. I go to my beginning meeting in Hazelton Pa next Monday, I can 't wait. I am very nervous and scared and excited all rolled into one. I don't know which surgery is best for me, so I need some input from all the pro's out there. I am leaning toward lapband at the moment. I just want to get healthy again. So its nice to meet you all.

Welcome, Gail.
I've had my lap-band for a year now. The band has worked very well for me because I was a volume eater, so a purely restrictive WLS procedure like the band is fine for me. I especially like that the band is adjustable according to my weight loss needs. However, if you are a snacker/grazer, or sweets or fats are a problem for you, you might want to consider a WLS procedure with a malabsorption feature, like RNY. If you have any questions about the band, just let me know. There's also a lap-band forum here on OH.
Good luck.

Hi Jean,
Thanks so much for your input, I overeat and snack and like sweets, I'm a mess. So with that said I don't know which surgery is best. I thought lapbad because it would curb my appetite
and you don't lose as fast, which I am afraid of because of sagging skin. I like the idea of RNY because you are really restricted and don't have to have fills. So I am totally confused. I am going to a lapband meeting so I will see what it is all about. thanks again Gail

Gail,
The band won't really curb your appetite. All it will do is restrict the amount of food you can eat at one time. Because the band slows the movement of food through your stoma, small meals should keep you satisfied for 3-4 hrs. But you will still get physically hungry, and you will still have to deal with "head" hunger.
As for the sagging skin, I don't think the rate of weight loss affects that much. It has more to do with genetics, age, how long you were obese, and how much you exercise. I am 55, have pretty good genetics, was obese for 25 yrs, have exercised faithfully since my band surgery, and lost weight slowly. But I have excess skin on my upper arms and lower abdomen. I'd rather have the excess skin than the excess weight.

Your post attracted my attention. I have been on OH for about 2 years now, mostly on the Texas Message Board. One thing I have found on MOST of the forums here is people having one particular type of WLS and favoring it and having nothing good to say about any of the others. It frustrates me so much. I find it refreshing when someone says this is what I had, but you may want to consider this. Thank you.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!

Hi Brenda,
Thank you so much for your kind words. I will post often. I have so much to learn and I need to understand the importance of each surgery. I am really scared and nervous and I know it will be awhile before I get approved so I just need to learn. Are you happy with your surgery and if you don't mind me asking how did you come to the decision of which surgery was right for you? Thanks again for reaching out. I need some friends.

Hi Gail, and welcome.
I had RNY almost a year ago after doing lots of research. I wanted to find the best procedure that would work for me, and RNY was it. You're doing it the right way, because you need to feel comfortable with your choice. No matter what you choose, it is a tool, that will enable you to change your life. Surgery, nutrition, psych counseling, physical conditioning and learning as much as you can about yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, are all part of the process. It's a heck of a journey, and as Brenda said, we're with you all the way. I kinda fell off the train for awhile, but I'm back and better than ever because of the caring people on this forum. Welcome, and enjoy the ride.
