OT: Consignment shop questions

just wondering if any of you ever SOLD anything at a consignment shop??how much (percentage) did the shop keep? how long was your stuff there? were you pleased with their display of your merchandise?

I sold stuff at he consignment shop before, It really isnt worth your while. They get half you get the other half. If It doesnt sell fast they mark it down and you would get less.
Just my thought on that.

Hi Margo.....I used to do consignment shops. The one I went to is no longer there......the  owner moved away.
They got 30 percent of the sale. They were very picky and wanted only up to date clothes in excellent condition. I did sell quite a bit and got more then I would have at a garage sale.
Clothes moved pretty quickly there because it was a popular shop.
A new one has finally opened up but I haven't checked it out yet. I obviously have plenty to take there this time!!!

Most charge anywhere from 25% to 35%. I think after a certain time they put the stuff on sale and then you get less....

There is a nice one here in Visalia called Working Gals Closet, they charge a lot and you can only put like 2 or 3 items in at a time....not worth it to me...I have tons....lol

I have done the consignment stuff.... it was okay.... I did all right.  However, I do much better with a garage sale or ebay.  It's more trouble.  And sometimes it's just easier to send it to Goodwill... but if you needing money, I'd do the garage sale thing. 

Consignment shops are picky and will only take top-notch things and usually take between 35-50% and you have to pick your stuff up timely. The contract you sign says if you don't they own it and can dispose of it any way they see fit. They donate it and take it off their taxes.

Ebay is easy!  I sell stuff on it all the time.  If you go to their site, and click on the SELL tab, it will walk you through it...It is very user friendly.

Aloha Cara....thank you so much! I will give it a try. I have a neighbor who also wants to sell in eBay. She's 83 and has a ton of beautiful stuff worth a lot of money, but she has been afraid to try to figure eBay out, too.

With regards to your neighbor in paticular, she should look out there to see what prices things are going for, so she has an idea what she wants to sell that way before putting them out there.  She can decide if it is worth it to sell the items there.  Also, go a little higher on shipping...I always get burned, because I try to be reasonable and then it comes out of my pocket instead of the buyer's.  Just a couple of tid bits...I have lots of them since I buy and sell there.  Good luck!

Around here, they take 50% of what they sell it for, and they only take the very nicest stuff.  I donate to Goodwill.  I list everything individually (as opposed to "#of bags), and because I can itemize on my income taxes, I do very well.

I don't have much left to donate anymore, 'cause my size is pretty stable, but there are always the "mistakes", and the stuff I buy without trying on.  Most of those things are from Thrift shops anyhow, so I do OK on them, too.
