How does my progress sound at 1 week post op?

My surgery was a week ago today, and I feel pretty good, but I just wanted to run it by this forum to see what you guys think.   As I said, I feel fairly normal; no pain anymore; I sleep better than I have in a long time.   I am easily back to doing my normal household chores that do not require heavy lifting, etc.

I don't have any bowel issues, I go just about every day, with no extremes there.

I am, however, having a much harder time figuring out what to eat and drink that I thought that I would.   I am not using a sippy cup.   I am able to drink a little faster than really small sips, but I am still very careful.   I haven't experienced any problems, no gas, pain, or any other indication that I am doing anything wrong.

As far as eating, I have read extensively on these forums and see that people do very different things in these first few weeks.   I am going to list an example of what I have been eating and drinking and I would love to see if you all think it is okay:

one Carnation Instant Breakfast shake, with added 3 scoops of protein, 2 scoops of powdered milk and 1 cup of skim milk

about 12 oz of unjury protein drink, broken up into 4 oz servings during the day

8 oz of SF apple juice

2 oz SF applesauce

2 oz SF pudding

4 oz strained cream soup, with added dry milk

4 or so SF popcycles

as much water, which I am ashamed to say isn't all that much, as I can squeeze in between all of the other, plus my vitamin, calcium, and nexium.

So, is this enough liquid?   I just wondered how it all sounds.

thanks, Cathy

Congratulations Cathy on getting to the loser's bench.

I can't really say whether your intake is good or bad.  As long as you are doing as your dr instructed, I'd say you are doing fine.  It's amazing how different our instructions are right after surgery.  All drs it seems have their own plans.  My dr, for example, said only 2 oz of protein shakes 6 times a day.  I could also have water, chicken broth, sf popsicles, sf jello.  I have been mixing my protein with skim milk.  The BCBS nurse that called me after wls suggested I try that.  Thank goodness I've been able to tolerate the milk - no lactose intolerance so far.  You did mention something else she suggested that I had totally forgotten - adding powerded milk.  Guess I'll be making another trip to the grocery store tonight.  I went earlier to stock up on my foods for the next phase - mashed potatoes, sf pudding, pureed meats, creamed soups...etc.

Glad to hear that you are feeling and sleeping better.  I still haven't gotten my sleep straightened out yet.
Hugs! Donna L (finding_me) - I just know I'm here somewhere...

Hi Cathy, and congratulations.  All Dr's and programs are different as far as when, how much, and in what time frame during the day to eat solids.  I think I may be safe in saying they all say to try and get in at least 64 oz. of liquid a day.  Personally, the liquid was the hardest to get in for the first month or so.   I was drinking  a protein shake and a half (24G) a day.   I should have been drinking 3 a day, but just couldn't get it down.  I got an oz. of cottage cheese, or riccota mixed with s/f syrup down each day; it took all day, but it finally went down.  S/F popsicles saved the day.  Puddings, broth, anything else shook up my TeaBag.   BUT in my 2nd week, I was so dehydrated.  Cathy, I learned the hard way: get the liquids in as best you can, dehydration is not the way you want to go!   Keep up the good work, and call your Dr. or nut if something doesn't sit right.  It's worth the hassle!!

Cathy,

Did your dietician or surgeon give you guidelines? If you are following that plan, great.

Come HEll or high water - get in your WATER!!!

This is just my own opinion but skip the applesauce and apple juice. Substitiute some thing with more nutritional value such as yogurt. Dannon Light and Fit is low in fat and sugar. Fage (Greek Yogurt) is super high in protein.

Juggling the food and water takes planning, effort and learning. After a while it is easy.

Sounds like you are doing VERY well for your first week. Good for you.

I hope I feel as good as you do a week after surgery.  I don't know about food intake, but wow, you're doing awesome in your recovery!
