I think I may have told you this before, Cheryl, but I get
Flax Seed Bread at my little grocery store around the corner. It is made by "Healthy Life".....it's $2.50/loaf and I keep it in the refrigerator cause it takes me a month to finish the whole loaf!! I will look at some of my flax seed recipes and see if I can find a good recipe for you.

I will also see if that company has a web site and listing of stores.

Here is on that I use, I had things to it at times, like sunflower seeds, walnuts, raisens, etc..I don't remember where I got this from but have used it many times....

Flax seed bread

One Loaf usually yields 12 slices.
Per slice:  168 calories, 4 gram's fat (22% of calories), 4.9g. protein, 29g. carbohydrates, no cholesterol, 91 milligrams sodium.
  • 1 tbs. active dry yeast
  • 1 3/4 cups warm water
  • 3 tbs. honey or 1/8 cup sugar
  • 1 tbs. oil  (safflower or olive)
  • 1/2 tsp.  salt  (may be omitted)
  • 1 cup flaxseed meal  * See notes below
  •
  • 3 cups of fresh ground whole wheat flour
  1.  In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warmed water.  Set aside until bubbly, about 5 minutes.
  2. Mix in the honey or sugar, oil, salt, flaxseed meal, and half of the flour.  Mix well.
  3. Stir in the rest of the flour.  Adding it a 1/2 cup at a time until it makes a soft, kneadable dough.  Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.  Knead for 10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  4. Coat a 9 x 5 inch pan with oil or nonstick spray.  Shape the dough into a loaf and place in the pan.  Cover; let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk.  For about one hour.
  5. Bake at 350F for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the loaf is browned on top and sounds hollow when tapped.
  6.
  1. Cool for 10 minutes and tap pan to remove.  Top may be brushed with butter or olive oil. Best sliced with a serrated knife and then wrapped in plastic.  May be frozen, if not used in a few days.  Since it has no preservatives it will mold quickly.
* Notes:  To make flaxseed meal, use a blender or coffee mil to grind the seeds to the consistency of cornmeal.
* As a general rule, 2/3 cup of flaxseed yields 1 cup of meal.
* This flaxseed meal may be added to any good bread recipe, replacing some of the flour and should have good effects on cholesterol.

Cheryl,
Have you tried Ezekiel Bread? It is tasty but my body is not happy with flax seed. Sad.

Type in Ezekiel Bread or foodforlife.com to find it in your area.

Then you can type in your Zip Code and it lists the stores where the bread is sold. I tried it for Spokane but there is a HUGE list and I have no clue what is near you.

Good luck

Thanks, Annette,
I looked it up and there is a store less than a mile from my house. I am going to give my bread making another try but get some of the Ezekiel bread I have seen you all talking about too.

i had bought the cinnamon raisin and was very disappointed-first it was over $5 a loaf! then it was very dry -maybe since so dense but it just wasn't great as toast....

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Oh, thanks, Pat

I just hate when you find something you love, make it a routine and then, bam! it's gone!

Good morning one and all,

We survived Ike.  There were some tense moments when small tornadoes started breaking out, but otherwise I don't think AR got it as bad as they predicted.  I hope everyone else in Ike's path fared as well as we did, but I'm afraid we aren't going to be that lucky.
I finally slept well last night.  When I got up to potty I made myself NOT look at the clock, which seems to be what gets my brain started and then I don't go back to sleep.

Well, today is my 2nd surgiversary!!!   So many things have happened is such a short time it's hard to put into words.  But, the one constant that has been in my life durning this process ( and all my trials and tribulations) has been my friends here on OFF.  Thank you for always being here, litterally through thick and thin and giving me the love and support you have.  Your friendship and sisterhood means the world to me, and I'm certain my journey has been enriched by knowing you.

Big ol' hugs to you all!

Susan
