Have you used pre-digested protein drink?

Hi

I have been trying different samples of protein drinks and have come across something called 'pre-digested protein". it packs a whopping 40 grams of protein in 1 oz.

Have any of you tried this ?     It's a bit costly, so I'd like to hear people's opinions on it before I  venture out and buy any..

Thanks so much!
Linda

Yes, that is the only type of protein I drink, that is the only kind that I being an RNYer can absorb. There are many types out there, some with less grams and some with no sugars, no carbs, etc......

I do my shakes at 30 grams each, that is about the max we can absorb at one sitting....the other 10 would be a waste and therefore being more expensive....

I only do whey proteins, I do not do the soy ones even though they taste better, I just don't absorb soy.

What type of surgery are you going to have? That will make a difference on the type and how much you need.....

In truth we need all the different proteins, the collagens are like what you get in Jello....we need both concentrate and isolate. Isolate especially right after extensive work outs...it replenishs the protein in the body right away. Concentrate on the other hand stays a bit longer in the system.

Remember that sometimes what you are reading is from a vendor that is trying to sell their wares. Unjury may be a good product, I don't know I refuse to even try it from a bad experience with her head people when my husband and I were in the nutrition business.  I believe there are other products just as good and taste just as good but lots cheaper......

That's my opinion.....and if I get slammed again so be it.......I have my own research and facts that I use......

But bottom line, we need all the different ones, but more pre-digested whey than any other....and like I said, lots depends on the surgery the person has....which I'm not sure was said yet....

Hi Darlne

Thanks for the information.   I have not met with the nutritionist yet, my appointment isn't until October.  But from reading here and reading the literature I've been sent, I know I will need to use these protein based supplements and was hoping to get a jump on things by trying them out now.

I will be having the RNY procedure, but have to do the 6 month medically supervised diet, which won't begin until October either.   I want it to  hurry up and get here, but too, I want to be able to be prepared for all possiblities, hence my efforts to try various products before surgery.

I understand from reading here too, though, that this planning could be a mistake, because I read that my tastes could change after surgery. Yikes!         My initial question about the protein was for this  reason.  If I could simply drink a 1 oz protein drink and get 40 grams of protein I thought it would be ok, even if it wasn't the best tasting product.

I thought I'd learned a lot about this surgery before coming to this board, but now I see that it was just the tip of the iceberg!

Thanks for the info!

Linda

I have always suggested to the pre-ops that go to my support group that about 6-8 weeks (if possible) to do a protein load. Drink lots of protein shakes. The more protein in your body at surgery time the better the recovery. Your body needs the protein to heal faster.

I still do 120 grams a day supplemented. I do not count my foods that I eat in my counts. I also had RNY and therefore do not know how much is absorbed. So, if I absorb any from my foods, I just consider that a bonus....

Keep us updated.....good luck, feel free to ask questions...Read profiles, etc.....

Thanks, Jay.

Yikes.  That is a lot of information to absorb!  (no pun intended) :)

Thanks for the information!  I will print it out to read again.
