The nerve of some people

As most of you know,my Mom passed away in March. Me,my brother and sister cleaned out her house and put in up for sale about 8 weeks ago. Today my sister stopped by to check the real estate sign in sheet to see if anyone has looked at it and the front door was open?? She immediately went to a neighbors house and called the police. She was afraid someone was in there. As it turned out someone had come in and stole the copper plumbing. There was water spraying out all over the place. The police, and fire department came and were unable to turn the water off. They called the city water department and they came and shut the main water at the street off.
As it turns out, a neighbor 3 doors down had seen 2 men sitting on the porch at the house at 9:30am this morning. She knew they didn't belong there. WHY DIDN"T SHE CALL THE POLICE THEN?? They left soon after she saw them. Best part was one of them was on foot and the other was on a BIKE !
Surely the police would have caught them. Now the police are saying they will probably be back since they left some of the pipe there. They probably left because the neighbor saw them. Since its within the city of Pittsburgh, I'm sure the police have more crime to take care of and won't be watching the house. There are detectives coming tomorrow to take finger prints. There are also footprints on the porch. If its not one thing its another.

How awful!
We were robbed once, but were lucky and they were caught because of a very observant neighbor.  There was 3 of them.  Of course, the bad thing was one only had to serve time (1 1/2 years) and the other two got off because that was the first time they were CAUGHT!

I hope they find the people that did that to your mom's house.

I am sorry you have had to go through so much especially the loss of your mother.

*~*~*~*~*~*~    O M G        It always amazes me how people can just "take" what does not belong to them.    And the neighbors... wanting to do what is right but afraid to help out.   What a frustration for you and your family.  I hope it works out well for all of you.....   Millie

I'm trying not to get too upset over it. I just try to take one day at a time. I just worry about the other older people in the neighborhood. It used to be such a nice area and over the years its gone downhill. You know the older people don't want to leave their homes even though its dangerous for them to stay. We were in the process of trying to get my Mom to move when she passed away. I wonder what she's thinking now.

Mary,
I'm sorry to hear about this.  Unfortunately being in the insurance business we are always paying out claims on these horrible things.    In the last 6 months we had one house that the people actually stripped the siding off the house.   We've paid a claim for someone steeling the furnace, water heater etc.  Most of these all being in our small town area.    The price of copper being so high is making it bad.  People are scraping anything they can get their hands on and it's not right!
Hope they catch them.

Mary, I'm sorry to hear of your the loss of your Mother, and to add more grief, the theft at her home...so sorry.

People are so low these days.....last month , two of our church vans, parked right in the church lot, had the catalytic converters stolen.   Since we sounded like a Sherman Tank going to pick up the kids, the insurance company was thrilled (not) to get that claim.

Please know that these creeps are in the minority, and what goes around comes around.  You're in my prayers for peace of mind.

THanks Melissa. You know they probably won't catch them, especially in a big city like Pittsburgh. Thats a small crime in our city.

Wow, Mary,

I've never ever heard of a story like this one before.  I'm so sorry you have to endure this.  Not sure if the police will be able to get justice in this but trust that these people will pay a price somewhere down the line.

Amazing,

Mary:

Stealing of copper pipes or other metal is very common because of the price of metal. Whoever was watching the house (the realtor, for instance) should have kept a better eye on things. The neighbors should have called police also. I guess because they saw a for sale sign they figured it was an open house for the taking. Too bad for you folks, but unfortunately, this is happening a lot. Thieves around here stole the bleachers from a middle school football field, metal picnic tables from a park, a decorative copper frog from a gazebo, etc. Anything metal.

The funny story is some thieves took a green Jesus statue from a church in Detroit ... what's funny about this is they thought it was copper because copper turns green as it corrodes ... well, this was ceramic! Jesus was dumped in an alley near a bowling alley and recovered a day later.

But a not so funny story ... other thieves took the metal Jesus off a cross in a church in Detroit. Some people will steal anything because of the price of metal.

And they're steal catalytic converters off cars, too, so be careful.

I am so sorry about your Mom's house. My son was robbed five times in three months before the police took him seriously. It is such a feeling of violation. You feel so helpless. We were angry but there was no place to direct it. I hope that it will be the last time.
