MS AND LAP BAND SURGERY....

Hello all,

My first time on the website was reffered by Weight Loss clinin in Federal Way, WA to this website.  I was wondering if anyone out there  has had any weight loss surgery with MS?

I was mainly interested in Lap band/and or type but was told that my MS might be a problem along with the fact I am immobile ( in a power wheelchair).

Is it possible and practical (safe) that I could have such a surgery?  From the few inquires I've made, it seems, NO.

P.S.  I am 50 years old and live in a rural area in the northwest.

Welcome Sandy,

I don't know how the surgery will impact you but obesity is not easy either. Have you talked this over with your Neurologist yet? That may be a good starting point since they must know you very well.

Do your research. There is a place on OH for questions and answers. Type in MS and see what answers appear.

Thank you.  I have talked to several doctors and have received various answers, but haven't talked to my neurologist yet.  Duh...you think that would have been the first one I asked.
Now I can get the correct one.  Again, Thank you!

I do not have MS, and I don't know about the surgery with MS, except of course that you will still need to be ableto follow all the Band instructions...  But I am pretty sureof this- Lap band is considered the least invasive and the least likely to change the way your body processes food. So, if any surgery will be OK I think this one would be.  Since MS effects strength and endurance, and can be made worse with stress, I think you might be playing a tug of war with the risks and benefits. Weight loss should help, going through surgery is not easy on the stress or the body.  My doc made me use Optifast protein drinks/soup/bars  for a month before surgery. So far, unfortunately, I have lost more on the Optifast than I have post-op.
I hopeyour Neurologist has some answers for you.
Blessings and hugs, hoping for the best,  Donna H
