Hello All,
I fell like I am going to lose my mind... I got to start on the 1/2 egg yesterday.  It went down really well.  Too well.  Now I am starving.  My meal plan per the Doctor is 64 ozs. of water daily, profect 2 daily,no snacking between meals and meals  consisting of broth and diet jello,no more than 60 cc. of each per meal. Now I can add 1/2 egg for one of the broth / jello meals. Next week starts the real food.  I have been under the misconseption that I would not be hungry for at least 6 months. Waaaaaaaaaaa, did I do any thing wrong.........   Any suggestions...

Hi Donna:

Wish I could give you some advice, but from what I understand from the VSGers I met from over here, it's a much different diet than the RNY uses. And what I used four years ago, well, it's practically ancient now ... so much has changed! The sleeve is so different than the RNY, so I don't know what to tell ya. I know I sure wasn't hungry for several months after ... not even a craving. Do you have a nutritionist you can call on? A psychologist? Someone to talk to at your bariatric center? Or is yours one of those that's just a doctor with no after-care?

Can you have SF popsicles? It's basically colored water, but it would give you the feeling of chewing on something ... or ice chips, too, the same sensation. I know, it's not food. But it's really important to take things slowly, because your body is healing yet.

Wish I had some better advice for you, but the VSG is new territory for me.

Thank you, Ellen,

I can call the bariatric coordinator tomorrow.  I feel like a failure, so I don't know what she will say.
I have an owners manual for my new tummy but all it says is follow the rules.

Don't feel like a failure ... this is new territory for you. Just keep asking questions. Can you have creamed soups? Or yogurt? Or cottage cheese? Just some suggestions. Don't know what your diet is like.

i truly do not think that you are a failure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and you don't either!!!!! you have been used to eating-all of your life...and now the rules have changed- at least for the beginning stages--
i am like eileen--not knowledgable of the VSG-sorry--but i do know that you are NOT a failure.....

are you up to walking yet?  add some extra liquid-even simply water!!!! i would imagine that the doc wants minimial 64 oz water--

another thing is--are you hungry in your tummy? or in your head??? head hunger is an awful thing for all of us...as i said- you are used to eating--we eat when we think we are hungry we eat when we are bored we eat when we are happy and we eat when we are sad.... we eat when we have friends around and we eat when we are alone....so--um--did i hit any of the spots???

my guess is that the only thing you did wrong was to think you are a failure

sorry i cannot offer help--early out from any of the wls' is tuff!!!!!
sending hugs....!

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

This is all I know about what you can and can't have...

Post-Op Dietary Plan for Vertical Gastrectomy Weight-Loss Surgery Patients

As with all surgical weight-loss programs, it is imperative that VG patients adhere to a strict postoperative diet. Patients must stick to a liquid-based diet for 2 weeks after surgery; 4-6 weeks after the operation, patients graduate to a 600-800 calorie/ day solid diet. Once goal weight is achieved, usually 1-2 years after surgery, most patients can consume about 1000-1200 calories per day.

Thank you Darlene,Margo, Eileen, Yes, I know the diet is really strict.... I don't think that it is head hunger.  Yes I have been walking since surgery.  I walk 15 minutes pretty much every night.  I will live through it.  I do not have but 6 days more till I can eat.  I can have all proteins, for one of my meals daily plus my protein will change to shakes.  I'd better just get up , dust myself off and go forward.  Thank you.

Have you taken a look around the VSG forum?  There is a FAQ section that may answer some things for you.  This is all new to you.  You'll get the hang of it soon, I'm sure of it!

I am POSITIVE that you are not a failure in any way. If you feel like you are starving, you feel like you are starving. There must be something about your body, and the way it heals that maybe you are actually a little ahead of the game.  Call your Doctor's office staff immediately if not sooner. My stomach growls more and I feel a bit hungry but I think if any of these surguries are actually working the way they are intended, there is a modification of the hunger system in some way... so  just find out what to do that will work for you. It is normal to need help.. that is perfectly normal.
Blessings and hugs, hoping for the best,  Donna H

Hello.  I saw your post on the VSG forum and didn't realize there was an "Over 50" forum so I came lurking over here and found many like "aged" people as myself.  I had VSG on 7/14/08.   After being on the VSG forum all this time, I understand that many people have issues with stomach acid which causes a horrible "hungry" feeling.  Did your surgeon prescribe an acid blocking medication such as Nexium or Prevacid or something?  If you are not on that sort of medication, you might try Prilosec OTC and take it twice a day for a few days and see if that helps your "hunger".  It could be acid.  Not sure if you've posted about your medications or not, but I've noticed if I skip my Nexium, I will feel "hungry" all day and almost nothing I eat helps me to feel any relief.  Don't know if anything I've said has helped, but anyway, there's my two cents worth.  - Cheryl
