At our age....
I have only just found this board; delighted to have done so. My surgery is on Tuesday (2 days from now!). RNY.
I'm 51, will hit 52 two days after the surgery. I've researched and read and asked lots of questions but I love the perspective of the 50+ group. What are some of the special things that you think we should be mindful of to assure success pre, post, and long term? Life post-op, since it so individual and somewhat unrpedictable, is especially worrisome.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

Hi Adele
Welcome, and good luck on your re-birthday. The one thing I can say is, Don't compare yourself to others'! You may read on the board that so-and-so has lost whatever, or heard from a friend that what's-her-face is doing whatever. As you mentioned, this is an individual journey. My biggest mistake was getting an e-mail from a woman who had surgery 1 day after me, and she lost 10#'s more than I had at the 6 month mark, and it set me into a tailspin. What ever reason she did, it shouldn't have mattered to me in my walk. But I let it get to me, and the "old me" reared her ugly head, and I got "lost" for 2 months. I'm back on track now, thanks to the folks on this board, but don't let it get to you.
You'll hear wonderful advice from people here, but that was my 2 cents worth. Oh, and sip, walk, sip, walk, sip, walk, etc.

Hi Terri,
I also share your surgery date. It is so true that everyone loses at different rates. It's hard not to compare losses- but they really are very individual. Whenever a group of WLS people get together that is one of the first questions I'm afraid- "How much have you lost?" rings round the group. Anxiety crops up at that time- the comparisons are in our minds even if we don't voice our fears. But how could we not feel those fears? After the big step we took, the thought of not being successful in the end is on all of our minds. I don't have answers either, but I think we should realize that we are all worried about failing and need to support each other wherever we are in our journey.

Hi,and welcome. The best advise I have to offer is for you to follow any instructions, they work!
It is wonderful to have you here, please ask and share ALL with us. I am further down the road, and it has been good, a few bumps, I am human!
So, see.. ya soon, and happy trails! You may want to get some melt in your mouth GasX..ask your doctor, or NUT.
I am so happy you are here! \
.. .. and drink,drink,drink.
Hugs!!

Thank you for this post.... I read a post from a woman (in her 20's) that lost almost 3 times what I have lost so far (we have the same surg date). Thanks for the reminder to follow my doctors/nut orders... and I will lose weight! And NOT compare myself with others.
All I need to be thinking about is getting in my six meals, 48 to 64 oz of liquid and my protein with the range my nut set for me.

Follow your doctors post op guidelines to a T. Throw away your scales. Only weigh at the doctors. Make sure you take the supplements and vits that the doc says to take. Do not rush eating the new foods.....
One of the main things you need to do is journal.....take pictures before surgery...I know you don't like your pic taken, but believe me, you will be happy you did......
Good luck and have fun on your journey......put your seat belt on...
