I recently was diagnosed with osteoporosis, two years post roux en y.  I am otherwise healthy, all my labs are very good.  My question concerns treatment.  My doctor is recommending Actonel, once a month.  I'm looking for research regarding the absorption of Actonel and its efficacy in gastric bypass patients.

Any help is greatly appreciated

I have been taking Fosamax with D for a number of years prior to wls.  My surgeon said it would not be a problem.  I continue to take it post op & my dexi scan has shown improved bone density.    Some have reported pouch sensitivity to the medicine, but I have had no problem.  Also, I believe weight bearing exercises are also important as the meds in treating osteoporosis.

My recent bone scan showed a 20% bone loss in my hips and the doctor diagnosed Osteopenia, which I believe is the forerunner to osteoporosis. The first med was Fosomax which was once a week. I experienced severe joint pain and was switched to Actonel, once a week.  He also said to increase wieght bearing exercises.

That wasn't much help.
