Newbie with questions
Hi! I've been trying to have gastric bypass surgery for a while now, but have been told I need the 6 months medical supervison with weekly weigh ins. I am working on that now. My question is this....I am 57. I'll be 58 in December. Is that too old to be successful with weight loss surgery. I know the risks are probably higher. Any thoughts you may have would be very helpful to me. Thanks!
I don't think 57 is too old. I had WLS at age 54 and have 2 friends who had it at age 53. All of us have been successful and none of us have had any problems or complications. All 3 of us recovered quickly from the surgery (2 lap-bands and one lap-RNY).
In my opinion, older folks actually have a better chance at success with WLS than younger folks because we are better able to follow our surgeons' & nutritionists' instructions and are highly motivated to improve our health.

I had mine at 59. When I started I was 345, lost some wt in nutrional classes and had surgery around 322. In two years I got down to 194, and have lost another 8 pounds or so since May, 2008. I was just thinking the other day, I haven't weighed this little since 1966. I would suggest attending support groups prior to your surgery and after your surgery. You'll learn a lot from these groups. As a pre op you'll hear from recent post ops about their experiences the first few weeks after surgery. As a post op (assuming you have surgery) you'll be able to discuss your situations, and have guidance to help you overcome obstacles during the wt loss process. My profile page talks about this in detail, and you might find it interesting. There are also other post ops in my support groups who are older than me too. DAVE

Yes, I can see where it would be confusing. I was actually scheduled for the surgery. Two days before it was to happen, our insurance company sent a notice saying they were now requiring a $5,000 co-pay. Can you imagine that? We couldn't afford that amount and the surgery was cancelled. I was so depressed I gave up on having this done. I haven't been to this site in a very long time. I am so sick of living with this weight and all the complications/restrictions it puts on me. I decided to try one more time. I believe I have met all the insurance requirements and it should be covered now. I am just worried about my age. But you all are giving me hope that I can still come through the surgery with a positive outcome.
