I finally broke down and went to the doctor yesterday.... my knee had just been getting worse and worse for the past few months...

I have to have a total knee replacement.

*sigh*

No clue what I am going to do for money if I have this surgery... gotta figure out how to survive for a few months...

Ain't life grand sometimes?

Anyone know about this surgery?... the doctor stated real plainly that it was my only option and that I have been ignoring the problem and just making it worse... literally bone on bone now thanks to that wonderful male ego braindead thing that makes us keep working through the pain instead of getting it fixed....

Marc, sorry to hear about your knee.

I've had both knees replaced.....both turned out fine. Recovery time was about six weeks and sorry to say probably a year until everything seems normal. You should be able to go back to work in six weeks tho'.With the newest technology this surgery is becoming less invasive and the newest implants are really great.
You will have physical therapy -- Do iT!! It makes the recovery a whole lot easier.

Good luck -- go to a really good orthopetic surgeon!!

P.S. some folks, like Eileen B. from this board haven't had a good outcome.....however, that is the exception, not the rule. Most ppl get along just great!

Marc, I am sorry about the news that you got. I guess that comes not only from being a stubborn male but from being a stubborn old male!! I know that my best friend ignores her knee pain a lot of times and she was told that she needs a total knee replacement too. I guess I told you this because it isn't just the male ego but anyones ego. I am going to keep you in my prayers even more than usual and know that it will be taken care of because God takes care of all of our needs. Take care of yourself my dear brother. Please remember that we are here for you always. Just yell for us and here we are.

I know about working thru the pain , both of mine were bone on bone and had been for a couple of years. finally had the right one done last December and was walking with a cane in one week. YOU HAVE TO DO THE RE HAB if you dont you wont have full use and you will have continuious pain. I am getting ready to do the left knee here soon. I got the new gender specific knee ultra flex. which means that it was made for a woman and will bend all ways that the normal knee does and it does. I even danced the jive this past week end and that aint easy, even with good knees. lol
check with workers rehab about funding your surgery. my brother got both of his done thru them. not sure of the exact name but if you call the social works places there in your town maybe they can tell you .

Marc.....I wish you the best on your upcoming surgery.

I haven't had one but my beat friend is a physical therapist and she says she treats many who have had hip and knee replacements. The ones that have the problems usually are the ones that don't do the exercises and follow up like they should. Get a good surgeon and a good physical therapist!

Good luck!

Hi Marc, my husband had both knees replaced, rt knee in 2005 and left knee in 2006. Earl's doc said the replacements can be different for men vs women, due to physical/mechanical issues, Earl did really well with his first knee some complications with the second due to the different physical therapists. If you want a "male" perspective he would be happy to talk to you about it.  Let me know I can pm you his cell # or email.  Paulette

Marc...push your doc and tell him about your issues and ask about the Synvisc injections....they may get you through for a while until you can get good insurance/be able to take off time from work.

They got me through prior to my WLS..as we were nervous about surgery on me because of my really bad diabetes. I have since had both knees replaced and it is wonderful. I had
them three months apart and I am very happy I did.

one of my work buddies had this surgery. She is now riding horses, going white water rafting andhaving the time of her life. SHe is 160 pounds lighter due to RNY, and has two new knees, she feels better than she did when she was in her twenties.    hope this helps you too.
Blessings and hugs, hoping for the best,  Donna H

I have had both my knees replaced.  Right in 1995 and the left in 1999.   Both at over 260 pounds.   It took a good 3 months to get over the rehab and healing.. but O MY!!! it was worth it.

Depending on your job and your recovery you may be able to return in about 6 weeks time.
Do you have AFFLAX or some like plan at work or individually? These will pay dureing your time off.
On March 25 of this year.  I had my first knee . replaced / a revision... They replaced the cushion and the bottom part.. It was amazeing.. I had minimal pain and was back driveing myself to therapy in 5 weeks.  The weight loss certainly did make a tremendous difference.
I have heard of a few people that have had a bad time.. with the replacements.. but the majority have never regretted it.
Like the others have said.. find a good Surgeon you are comfortable with.. and follow his rules.
   Good luck to you.   Alice

Read up on this ... there is a good web site called http://www.kneeguru.co.uk/KNEEtalk/index.php#6 ... they have message boards like us, and people post and ask questions daily. Plus, you can find surgeons there too. I read a couple books before I decided to do this.

Contrary to what Connie said, I did my exercises religiously and still ended up with problems; I am seeing my second doctor now and he doesn't know what the problem is either. But as Pat said, that's the exception. Everyone else I know sings the praises of knee replacement; I'm the one that didn't have a good experience. I'm still hoping things will turn around. Mine was going O****il about October when for some reason I started to have pain ... turned into patellar tendinitis or now tendonosis, which is chronic and supposedly can't be treated. Now supposedly I also have some slippage, which may mean I need a revision ... but, like everyone has said, I am the exception. But ... again, I did my exercises, I did my PT, I had five, or six, can't remember, go-rounds at PT, plus the stuff I did at home. Like WLS, even if you follow the rules, sometimes things go wrong.

If you have a good outcome, you will feel so much better ... I was going that way until things started to go bad. And it's so much better than dealing with the pain.
