Any ideas for me on this?
I just got a dehydrtater from freecyle. In fact I get it this morning. I just can't wait. I know that I won't be getting a book on this so I could use some help from anyone who uses one. I would like to start out with fruit and then work up to jerky. Can someone help me and tell me how they do this? I need help since I have wanted one but just never bought one. I haven't got the faintest idea on what to do.
I'd love to have a dehydrator, but it's not in the cards just yet.... in the meantime, you might try going to the manufacturer's website and checking to see if the user's manual is available online.... or google for recipes....

Do a simple search on google. Try different phrases like "how to use a food dehydrator?" or something similar. I'm sure you'll find some blog or do-it-yourself site that offers some good tips. I tried using one many years ago (before Internet) and did not have good results. DAVE

My husband uses one to make jerky...if you can't find directions on line..let me know and I will get him to tell me the directions for use...I may be able to dig up the booklet as I throw all direction booklets in one big plastic bin in my home office closet and I am sure it is probably there. I borrowed one from a friend a few years ago. Tried drying apricots. Only problem was it took a long time (a couple of days) and then they "shrunk" and then. . . . my then 20 yr old son was home from college. . . .and he ate them as fast as I got them dried! We have a lot of "free" fruit around and can glean apples, apricots, often peaches. I'd like to try it again some time when I don't have a human garbage can around to "help" me!

Brenda, get the book "putting food by" your library probably will have it. It talks about canning, freezing, and dehydrating. Again doing a google search would yield lots of stuff too. I LOVE dehydrated parsley, basil, peppers from it. Tastes so much better then the store bought dehydrated stuff. Enjoy!
