Good morning Karen and all,

We never made it to the Italian Festival. We got 'close' but every road was blocked because the parade was happening. The road crew advised us to expect a TWO HOUR delay getting into the city of Watkins Glen. We decided to do a large detour and go out to lunch.

Dylan is so curious about my eating and asks many questions. His biggest concern is the lack of sugar in my diet. He said he would DIE if he couldn't have sugar. I told him I would BUST if I ate as he does.  We both laughed.

He has no weight problems, eats a normal selection of foods (just tons of it) is a healthy weight, and is catching up to his 6'4" Dad & grandpa in height. I feel like a wee person next to the men in my family. Love it.

That's all for me. Let this beautiful day begin.

Annette, I bet it's a challenge to keep enough food in the house for an active teenage grandson! I have a cousin visiting for a couple of days from St. Louis next week. She'll be here such a short time that we probably won't do much but visit. I think I will try to take her to our local Saturday market across the river. It is largely hispanic and so colorful and fun. Lots of music, wonderful smells and tastes! Fresh flowers, fruits, produce, not to mention all of the yummy enchiladas, fajitas, tacos. . . . Sorry the festival didn't work. That sounds like fun too. But not the 2 hour wait!

Happy Sunday, Karen, and Everyone,

Up early for a Sunday morning for me.  Couldn't sleep any longer as I have a sore left shoulder.  I think I hurt it lifting a watermelon.  It was a BIG watermelon and I probably turned the wrong way.  Hope it doesn't last too long.

Good appt with the new nutritionist yesterday.  She was able to tell me I need about 90 grams of protein each day based on my height and current weight.  She gave me some leads on products I can use as well.  She felt I was doing really well with foods I've been eating and such so that gave me reassurance.

Today is a family and friends dinner for two birthdays.  I share my birthday with a woman who is turning 83.  Should be a fun outing with about 16 of us.  Being a Sunday, we can go a bit early to avoid some of the crowds.  She is a wonderful woman who had some health issues earlier this year so it's nice to see her doing well.  Even through her back surgery she kept her weekly hair appointment.  It was very important to her!  LOL

Got to see our little grandson yesterday and will again today.  Two times in one weekend makes for the perfect weekend.

Hope you all have a great Sunday!

Hugs,

Kathi

Kathi, Sorry you hurt your shoulder. I have a fond Watermelon memory to share. My mom absolutely loved a good watermelon. Her theory was that it had to be a BIG one to be good. When she was about 93 she bought one at the store. The kid at the store put it in her trunk for her. She didn't think to ask if he'd come HOME with her! She got home and yep, you got it. It must have weighed about 20 lbs. Mom was about 100 lbs soaking wet and not strong enough to get it out and into the house. She was still driving then which is another story! Not to be deterred she went in the house, came out with a big knife, carved it into 1/4's and hauled those in one at a time. She said it was worth every bit of the time and the effort as it was the best she'd had in years! That woman never took no for an answer. She would find a way to a solution sometimes with scary results!

Karen,

I wish I would have thought of carving it up instead of lifting and carrying!  Your mother was a wise, wise woman.

I'll be fine and it's all good...  The watermelon tastes great so the shoulder is prob'ly worth the pain.

Hi Connie,

My birthday is actually tomorrow, August 4th, but we have to celebrate on the weekend because of conflicting work schedules.  Thank you for the birthday wishes!

The NUT was very good and took the time to go over the Whey Protein Isolates and Whey Protein Concentrate being best as measured by the Biological Value.  The BV of certain proteins is calculated by measuring the percentage of protein consumed and absorbed but not excreted.  That means how much protein consumed actually remains within the body and how much protein the body will actually use.  She said the second measure of protein quality is the protein-digestibility amino acid score.  It's a method based on human amino acid requirements.

She gave me a list of values and Whey Protein Isolates and Whey Protein Concentrate lead the list.  They are followed by Whole Egg, Milk, Egg White, and Cottage Cheese all having the highest values.  She surprised me by showing Yogurt very low in value so I plan to adjust accordingly and see how the numbers are in October when I go back for follow up.

Probably more info than you asked for but there it is!

Hugs,

Kathi
