This is just my own personal opinion but I asked my wls PA about getting the protien through the shake and how some say that it isn't absorbed. She told me that she has never heard of that before. So she said that the shakes are a good way to get  the protien. As I say~just mopo. I need to start using the shakes again. I think that the protien is where I need help~and the exercise too since I have been lacking on that. And I belong to the Y so go figure!

Did you have RNY? how much was bypassed? why does RNY work? because of "mal-absorption".
There are many kinds of protein shakes and drinks, not all designed to do what we need. High calorie ones are for your body builders.

The protein in the drinks is "pre-digested" meaning we don't have to digest them, They go straight to the blood. I always say a good combo of isolates and contrentrates is the best for us. I had RNY, IF AND THAT'S A BIG IF, I absorb anything from my foods I eat such as the proteins, then that's a bonus to me. That's how I look at it.....plus I don't have the grey ghost affect or hair falling out, I have more energy and look better also.

I hate getting started on this subject......we had a Sports Nutrition store and I did extensive study and research on our needs, such as the drinks, vitamins, and minerals.....but always talking to the wall....sigh...

Darlene and Connie are right in that you need to eat protein first, then veggies and fruit. If you need added
protein to get to your daily totals, then add the protein shakes as a snack in between meals.

There will never be a resolution to the debate about protein shakes...some do, some don't....you will have to decide what is right for you. Get those calories up to at least 1000 and include the protein shakes in your calorie
count, but please eat some good protein too.

Good luck, Jan.

Hey Jan,

I can only tell you that my doctor says that when we increase our calories over 900 but less than 1100, we are at a good place to lose weight.  The protein drink debate, well, I was told by my surgeon to eat protein first and eventually go off the shakes, which I did, and as you know, my body, like many of your bodies, cannot absorb enough protein and  I almost died. Yes, died.  So, I drink protein drinks first then add the food and even with that, my levels are so low that they are doing the labs every other week as we watch them creep up a little at a time.  The specialists that I'm seeing and his nutritionists say that some people who have wls do well with the foods they eat and others not so much, and I'm one that cannot absorb protein.  I hate the shakes, hate the premixed, hate them all, but I do drink them and I am getting better.  Increase your calories, I did and dropped ten pounds. LOL  This is so different from pre wls.
