anyone smoke?
"anyone out there have trouble quitting smoking?"
That could very well read "everyone (who has ever smoked) out there has trouble quitting smoking!"
I quit 6 years ago this coming January... and here is what I truly believe is the truth regarding quitting smoking;
You can't quit until you are ready mentally.... I loved smoking... truly enjoyed it! ... so how could I quit something I really liked? .... You have to change the way you think about cigarettes...
For 3 weeks prior to my quit date (ya gotta set a date) every time I lit a cigarette and take a drag I would go through these mental uhh... gymnastics?... anyhoo.... you can just think these things or, even more effective, say them outloud...
(Pick up the pack) "Those (expletive) have deliberately hooked me on these things just to make more money"
(Take a drag) "I just lost another day of my life... less time with family, retirement, etc... just for a stinking smoke"
(Take a drag) "I just made it harder for me to breathe"
(Take a drag) "I just made myself smell like a stinking filthy ashtray, and everyone notices"
At the end of the 3 weeks I was so pissed off at the tobacco industry, cigarettes, and myself for being so gullible that I had trouble smoking all the way up to the date I had set!
This is the method I used... and it worked great for me... I was able to quit and hardly had any problems at all, other than the annoying part where you keep checking for cigarettes and a lighter when I left the house.
I hope this helps.... if not, it helped my typing... I need the practice!

I quit smoking in 1991. I'd tried before, but failed. But then I thought I'd try something new. I went to a hypnotist. It was a group setting, with about 40 people. We all brought pillows and laid on the floor with our shoes off. The hynotist spoke. Next thing I knew, it was 45 minutes later. We were woke up to take a 15 minute break. Then another 30 minute session. I left that group, and never felt like smoking. I intentionally left half a carton of cigarettes in my work vehicle, to tempt myself to see if this really worked. After 6 months I threw the cigarettes out, and have never smoked since. My RNY surgeon will NOT DO SURGERY on anyone smoking. He requires you to stop smoking for at least 3 months, and does test for nicotine. Smoking will cause possible irritations to surgery areas, and ulcers can happen as a result. DAVE

Well I Quit April 20th after 37 yr......37yrs.....boy thats a long time............The doc said ...no surgery untill u have been clean for 6 to 8 weeks...... I went to my primary doc and he gave me the patch....and wellburntin........[wrong spelling] I was really scared.....i thought i might die....without a cigre. ....... But I also knew no surgery!!!!.........I set a date....and It really worried me........so i started taken the pill a week before my quit date........first, one a day....then on my quit date two a day.....plus the patch. oh a week before.... i started buying by the pack....my brand was marlboro lights......so i bought .....kools...cambels......all the off brands i could fine......some even made me sick...... so my date is here...i would get up at 4:45 AM for work and my the time I got on my bus at 6:05 Am i would have smoked 5 cigre.......and believe it or not... it was really easy to stop smoking......i only took the pill and patch for two weeks ......i was losing my friends they said i was a real B.....lol...no but really..... i started to see it myself..so i stoped.....them both.....and the reason i think it was so easy ...cause in the back of my mine i wanted the surgery more than i wanted that cigret. ....and just like every other person i loved smoking......3 months later i still think about it .....my friend came by yesterday......and she smokes.....and the smell.....smelt sooooo good.....lol....but that feeling end......the hardes was trying to lose weight while quiting smoking...two really bad habits at once....i just worrie about after surgery.......months after surgery.....will i still be able to fight that damn monkey......lol
Sorry so belated--way busy summer here in MN! Anyway, the ONLY thing that ever worked quitting smoking off/on for 24 years was obtaining a prescription for Chantix! I took it for two months. The advantage: you CAN smoke while taking it. It took about four weeks for me to actually feel the effects: it works two ways--
1) eventually diminishes the pleasureable 'high' from nicotine.
2) eventually diminishes the cravings.
At about three weeks, I was convinced it wouldn't work for me, though kept taking it, kept smoking. Then suddenly one day while smoking, I looked at the cigarette, and realized I was not getting an iota of pleasure from it, and also had not craved the nicotine--I was merely appeasing the habit I did not refill the prescription for the third month, and had quit for good! Best wishes and good luck! Patti
