Oh Annette you are not bad!  Can I ask when you started drinking coffee again?  I will check with my surgeon as my little booklet with dietary guidelines doesn't mention coffee.  Thanks for your response. ~~ Pam

Pam,

It was on my breakfast tray the morning after surgery. Along with my bottle of water and some boullion. Only the water tasted decent.

I was told I could try regular coffee after about six months, but don't do too much of it. But still make sure you get enough other fluids in it ... this echoes what other people said. But what other folks don't say about fluids is you can get a lot of your fluids from your foods ... things like fruits and veggies (lettuces especially). I learned that from our nutritionist at the support group meeting.

Some people will not tolerate the caffeine; it will irritate the pouch. Doesn't bother me. I love my caffeine.

Thanks Eileen.  The nutritionist with my surgeon also talks about foods that have a fluid base - expecially when we complain how hard it is to get a full 64 ounces of water/fluids in.  The rest all good advice too.  Thanks for responding. ~~ Pam

I'm with Annette and some of the others.  I didn't touch coffee for almost a year, decaf or otherwise.  Once I started again, I was hooked...again!  Now I drink at least 2 large cups of regular coffee a day, throughout the morning, and I use a little half and half in it.  I do find that if my stomach is totally empty, sometimes it bothers a bit, so I'm careful about that.  I make my own iced coffee, too, but for that I use decaf.  I tend to drink it later in the day, and in larger quantities.  If I use the regular, I don't sleep too well.  That's been a problem for me for years.

My surgeon says it's all fine, in moderation, as long as it doesn't bother my pouch.  That's pretty much his attitude about all my intake., and it's worked well for me.  Coffee, and plain water, are about all I drink.  Not a fan of Crystal Light or tea.

It's all a learning experience, and all individual.  Best of luck!

Candy

Thank Candy.  It's great to know there are other coffeholics in this forum!    I know I will play it safe and will check with my surgeon but some mornings, the coffee maker just sitting on the counter speaks to me in a rather loud voice.  ~~ Pam

Hi Pam,
I have been drinking coffee, the real thing, since almost day one. No more than 1 or 2 cups. Most often in the am. Could NEVER not have my coffee, my love, my friend, MY COFFEE!!!!!! I love coffee. Been drinking it since I was 11. Maybe that's why I'm short...hmmmm...

Thanks Cheryl.  I didn't start until nursing school but have been an avid coffee drinker since.  Have to wonder just how short you are? ~~ Pam

I LOVE my coffee, but I can't handle the caffeine...it constricts my blood vessels and the oxygen to my brain and makes me dizzy if I have too much....so I drink half caffeine and half cappachino...a couple of times a day...sure wish I could drink more....my doc has always had me take Previcid to prevent an ulcer at my pouch...it has worked so far. Marti, as much as I can't wait to try it, I am a little afraid that maybe the same thing will happen to me.  I may be headed for decaf if I decide to bring coffee back into my life. ~~ Pam
