Hi everyone.  I have just found this site, and it makes me very happy to see others who are over 50 and looking to have wls.  I am 57 and I live in chatham, Ontario Canada.  I am on the Ontario site of obesityhelp.com and have found lots of great people there, but they are mostly younger than I am.  I was wondering if there were any people over 50 who are considered to be a  "light weight" who have had or are going to have WLS.  I have a bmi of 37.9, and  it makes me laugh to use the term light weight - only on obesity help.com!!!

Which surgery did you have?  I have read about the DS and RNY because I want to be informed before I see the surgeon, and I would like to find out the type of surgery that others have had to help me in my decision making.
I will see my regular doctor next week and, hopefully, I  will be set to have the surgery sometime in the fall.
Thanks for your help - I'm really looking forward to getting to know others here.

Hi Linda  -  Thanks for the information.  I have heard about the VSG, but I don't know much about it.  I'm going to take a look at the vsg forum.  I want to know as much as I can.
Thanks again.

Hi Margaret ..... welcome to the best forum on OH. We have a great bunch of gals, and a few guys, here and talk and support each other all the time.

I was 68 1/2 when I had RNY last August. I got along just great -- no problems so far (knocking on wood). Wt. loss has been somewhat slower than younger ppl but I feel great.....off all diabetes meds and blood pressure meds. It may take me another year to reach my goal of losing 143 lbs., but I don't care....slow and steady wins
the race.

Good luck to you on making your decision as to what kind
of WLS to have. Because I was Medicare insured they only pay for RNY or Lap Band at this time.

Post often = we'd love to hear from you.

Hi Pat
Thanks so much for responding to my questions.  It is certainly great to see that there are others who are over 50 who have had surgery.
Your surgeon is one of the ones that I am looking into.  I live not too far from the Windsor/Detroit border and will probably have my surgery in Michigan.
Where does Dr. Kemmeter do his surgery?  Would you recommend him?  How long were you in hospital and did you have the lap rny?
Thanks again.

Dr. Kemmeter does his surgery at Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids. I can only tell you, I think he's the best there is.....he is caring, kind, and has a terrific sense of humor. He is with MMPC/Michigan Wt. Loss Clinic in
Grand Rapids. I live over 100 miles from Gr. Rapids so I asked to stay an extra day just in case....no problem there.
Had my surgery on Friday and went home on Sunday. Yes
I had lap rny - have six tiny incisions on my belly. Never
had much pain at all and was up walking within four hours of going to my room after recovery room.

If you have other questions regarding MMPC or Dr. K.
you can send me a PM or e-mail ([email protected]).

Marg,

Welcome to OFF, it's a great group we have here, very supportive and caring and willing to encourage any who are in need.

While my BMI was 45+ when I got started, I was still in the lightweight category since I had a little over a hundred pounds to lose. . .  now I'm a BMI of 32+, still have another 45 lbs I want (will re-evaluate that in 27 lbs.) to lose.

I chose RNY because I did not a foreign object in my body and did not want to be tethered to a doctor and worry about complications of slippage, rejection or other things down the line, which is not to say that RNY does not have complications, however, after seeing other family members who underwent it, some with as many as 5 years from surgery, and do well, as well as much research as to what was available in my area, surgeons and hospitals, I chose a place whose speciality was RNY and I am thrilled with my results thusfar.  Research and make your decision based on what you believe will work best for your lifestyle, because in the end, it's a matter of what you can live with for the rest of your life.  Remember no matter which choice you make, it is about dedication to changing a lifetime of bad habits and learning different coping skills, remember they operate on our stomachs, not our brains, so if we don't change how we relate to food, well there are plenty of stories about people *****gain their weight. . .

Once again, welcome to our nice friendly place and I'm pretty sure I can say there is always room for one more at our table. . .

Hugs, Laureen

Hi Laureen
I'm worried about how I am going to change the way that I deal with food when I haven't been able to do so in my 57 years!   How does the RNY or any other wls surgery help me do this?  The worst possible outcome for me, and I know for everyone else, would be to have the surgery and regain the weight.  God, that would break my heart and probably my will to do anything else.
Thank you for your warm welcome; I think that i will probably be hanging around here quite a bit.

Hi Marg,

How you go about changing your relationship with food is by attending support group meetings and paying attention to what you eat, how much you eat, sites like FitDay.com are places where you can log daily what you are taking in, a good habit to start now, so later you've already become aware of it, or post on Linda's "What's eating you" daily post.  Whether you are eating to reward yourself, soothe yourself, boredom, these are some of the many ways that most of us got obese to begin with and that is what must change, the surgery is a tool, it will limit the capacity to little amounts, it may limit your ability to have sugar and fats, which will further aid your weight loss, but over time, some people find they can eat those things again, that they can eat more than after the first 6 months to a year after surgery or they start grazing, eating a little here and there through out the day, especially the wrong carbs and such and that's when they get into trouble if they have not done the other work on themselves.  So you have to think of the surgery as a way to help curb what you eat for a period of time, though for some the limitation is always there, others can eat more, either way, at one point or another you will have to have changed your attitude about chosing a healthy lifestyle that includes some sort of physical activity and eating healthy.

So hopefully that gives you some ideas of the road ahead, we here are all doing what we can to allow our tool to work at it's most efficient capacity.

Hugs, Laureen

Welcome Marg,

I had RNY 20 months ago at age 59. At 320 pounds, I was not a lightweight. Today at 113 pounds I am pleased to be in a more normal range.

Can you attend a support group meeting and ask questions?

Come back often and let us know how you are progressing.
