Anyone know if protein shakes count as meals?

I use Chocolate Designer Whey from Trader Joe's which has 18g protein, 2g sugar and 2g fat.  I fix that with a cup of nonfat milk and a half a cup of plain yogurt, 6 ice cubes and a pared apple, whipped up in a blender. . . that's my lunch. Marti in San Jose

Protein shakes should be used as a protein supplement. Meal replacements are different. Labels are different also. Meal replacements have more things in them and HIGHER   calories.... This is my opinion, mine alone. Protein shakes should and or could be used as snack replacements.

Darlene, Thanks for sharing this info. You are right. When I make my protein shake for a meal it lacks the total nutrients needed. I finally ! ! ! broke my two week stall. I love it when I see at least a 2# loss each Sun.... ... Millie

I think there are some protein shakes that are meal replacements, some are supplements.  There's a product availiable at Vitamin Shoppe (in-store and online www.vitaminshoppe.com) called "Pat's Diet Shake".  I believe those have all the nutritients in them and are meal replacements.   I guess you really have to read the label or ask the staff in the store to find out which are which.   Then of course there's always BOOST and ENSURE in a pinch.

Thanks for the advice.   Looks as if you and I have something in common -- dogs!  My unconditional love and admiration comes from my 10-year-old brown mutt, 110 pound Samantha, and soon-to-be 7-year-old border collie, Brewster.  Brew has learned to run along with me on my recumbent tricycle so is an exercise buddy. I will post their pics on my profile - still working on getting one of myself up there as well.

Thanks, I look forward to seeing pix of your dogs.  We had a border collie mix when I was growing up.

You should probably ask your surgeon/nutritionist.  For me, considering the calories in them, I always count them as a meal. Lou
