Hot flashes after surgery?
Hi, I had gastric bypass on Tues. June 3. Everything went great, no nausea, not hungry and down 14 lbs on my liquid diet already. I had to go off my herbal / soy hot flash pills two weeks before surgery, they are huge pills I will need to crush and put in my blended foods next week, doc already said it is ok to take them. I am having alot of hot flashes now, way more then the week prior to surgery when I was already off my herbs. I thought I saw somewhere there can be hot flashes after surgery due to hormone changes while loosing fat. Is this correct? If so that must be why I have so many of these lovely hot flash spells (ickky).
Thanks for any insight.

Kim, I have noticed that my hot flashes are back. I was put into medical menopause about 15 years ago. I went through years of hot flashes since I was the queen! They went away for the most part and then I had surgery and I notice they are back again but not near as badly as before. I have also noticed that once in a while I get them after I eat for a moment and I think personally it is my blood sugar. I use to have them before surgery and it was my BS too. That is just my idea.
Mine are back too. I had been on HRT for 8 years prior to surgery, came off them about 6 weeks before. Wow, no hot flashes, great, thought I was over it.
Then about 2 - 3 months ago they started to return. Not too bad, not much actual sweating, but still hot enough to throw the blanket off me at night, and wish I could do the same with my clothes through the day. My doctor tells me it's because of the fat loss, the hormones are being released as the fat cells shrink. Oh well. She won't give me HRT again, says that 8 years is plenty long enough, so I'm taking Estroven. Not sure if it's helping yet, but I'm living in hope.
I'd recommend that you don't actually crush them, just get a pill cutter and cut them into very small pieces.
Congratulations on completing your surgery and losing 14 lbs already. I had my surgery 5/31, and had hot flash symptoms when receiving Reglan (I'm not sure of spelling). I know some surgeons send patients home with it or a similar med to stimulate the digestive system. Just another thought. By the way, the Reglan was discontinued while I was in hospital, and my system is working fine without it. Isn't it exciting to be this far along on our journeys?

Thanks everyone for your response, at least I know I am not alone. I hope when I get back on the supplement for hot flashes it goes away. The hot flash supplement worked great prior to surgery. I will bring this up at my one week post op appointment tomorrow because if this is due to fat loss I am in for ALOT of hot flashes !
