I've gone through the list of forums but somehow missed the 50's and Over.  I am 58, to turn 59 in July.  I am scheduled for RNY June 12th.  I am glad to find this board and will read through posts as I am curious if there are any special issues/concerns I should be thinking about that are specific to not being in my 20's or 30's and having WLS.  Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. ~~~ Pam

Welcome to OFF (over fifty forum). This is an awesome place to be. Everyone is so nice. You will get tons of support and plenty of feedback on just about any subject. This board is like family!! The best advice I can give you is to follow your doctors orders. Don't cheat by  having things you shouldn't have and doing things before you are allowed to do them.  This surgery is the best choice I ever made for myself. I am so much healthier and happier. I don't have high blood pressure anymore and no more diabetes. I can run up and down stairs. I can walk, ride bike, sit on the floor......the list is very long. I would do this again in a heartbeat. Congratulations for making the decision to change your life. To be healthier and have more energy then you know what to do with. I will keep you in my prayers that your upcoming surgery is uneventfull and your recovery is a speedy one. Welcome Aboard!!!! Hugs, connie d

Thank you both.  I am feeling very solid in my decision.  I first looked into WLS back in 2002.  Did a doctor supervised weight loss program as a pre-requisite insurance required.  Lost 140#.  Long story short, two knee injuries and now significant osteoarthritis in my knees, the exercise I was getting was greatly reduced and over time I regained @ 85% of the weight.  My two co-morbidities are of course the osteo and hypertension.  The hypertension disappeared after the previous weight loss so I am hoping to eliminate it again.  ~~~ Pam

Welcome Pam, You saved the best for last! Our age group seems to do very well with no special concerns I can think of at the moment. Unlike the youngsters we talk about our joint replacemts, grandchildren, and furbabies more often. Hmm, words of wisdom. Relax and fasten your seat belt. This is one crazy ride. It is wonderful, but totally insane - in a good way of course. Annette

Welcome to the best board on OH. Oh alright, I may be prejudice but I bet you won't find anyone on here that won't agree with me. lol Seriously, we are here for each other and we share, laugh, cry, rant and enjoy each others joys and disappointments all with great love for each other. You can see some blood families that are not as close as we are to each other. If you have questions there is someone who has an answer. We just live, love and laugh together. We hope you post often so we can get to know you and you us. I was 54 when I had my RNY and I wouldn't change anything. My only wish is that I had it earlier but then I probably wouldn't have been ready for it. My cardiac problem is doing better, the sever back problems are better, the diabetes is gone and the arthritis feels so much better. All in all I am loving life the way that God intended me to. I am so gratefull for the gift of life that I have been given. Congratulations on your upcoming surgery. I will keep you in my prayers for a safe surgery and a speedy and uneventful recovery.

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter
that tells what kind of life you have lived.

Hi Pam and Welcome to OFF! I'm scheduled for surgery this Thursday, June 9.  It's so exciting!  I'll be anxious to follow your progress along with my own. I'm glad you found this special group of amazing people.  They have helped me more than I could express and look forward to the support and sage advice as I go through this journey. Take care, Kathi
