It's Official...I am not a diabetic anymore...

Marti, how long did it take to come off the insulin altogether? I've been diabetic for 20 years, but only on insulin for the last two. I should have been on it earlier but didn't want to admit it.  Before surgery, six month ago, I was taking 95 units in the morning, along with Metformin and another drug. I've been able to reduce the insulin to 24 per day, and I'm still on the same Metformin but that's the only diabetic drug. I've been concerned that as I've been diabetic for so long I may NEVER be completely free of it.  Did it take you a while?  Now, if only I could get my hypertension to behave itself.

I have been diabetic for about 10 yrs. and was on three medications. Prior to surgery, they took me off the metformin and I was never put back on. About three months after surgery, my PCP took me off Januvia, and two months ago I was taken off 5 mg. of glucotrol. I was having extremely low blood sugar readings ....twice 39 and one 42. My last A1C was 6.1 and prior to that was 5.6. So I am officially not a diabetic, however they say once you are, you always are?? My morning readings range from 89 to 120. I am also off one bp pill - and looking forward to being off the other pill soon.

Good luck,
Pat R.

like you I didn't think that I would ever not be a diabeti****il my PCP said that they would take it off my "diagnosis"......I would say that you are also there......I don't even have to do blood sugars anymore.....directions of my diabetic doctor...he said that my A1C's would tell the story.. Hugs, Marti

I am going to ask my PCP when I go back next week, to take diabetes off my diagnosis too...He has a lot of "stuff" on there that is no longer applicable. He wanted me to check my sugars once a day, but I will also ask him if that is still necessary. I will find out what the BP is when I see him, and maybe we can start weaning off the other pill (which is my highest priced prescription). I am so happy for you = I never had to take shots, but my late hubby did and my brother does, -- it's no fun, that's for sure.

This WLS has been a miracle for me....at age 69 I actually feel more like 40!!!!! I told my PCP that and he looked at me like I was crazy.....LOL.

Hugs back at ya'
Pat

Hey Pat, I am so happy for you...and yes, I think sometimes you have to be aggfressive with your docs..... You sure don't look 69.....it is good you don't feel that way either.... One of my husband's golfing buddies was picking him up yesterday and I was in the driveway [on the phone] and then I went to say Hi to him and he said "I heard you looked so much better..BUT you look wonderful....I just can't believe it......don't get me wrong you were always a pretty woman, but WOW now I just can't believe it."....so the reinforcement is always nice. Love, Marti

The amazing part of the surgery was that I was off of insulin within 4 weeks of my surgery.....too many low blood sugars.....it was even before I lost my weight......that is the amazing part. ...my diabetic docgtor put me on metformin for ahile just "because" ...but it turns out I didn't really need it......besides I always got diarrhea from it anyway.....don't you worry it is a miracle...this surgery.......you will be free of it.....Hugs, Marti.

you will be free of it...plus the hypertension is also going to be a thing of the past.....a high BP for me now is 132/76......no BP meds.....all I take is my med for my panic attacks...but I have had them for 30 years....and of course my vitamins. Hugs, Marti

..only about 4 weeks....then on Metformin for about a year and then nothing.....my diabetic doc said I just needed to do my A1C's about every 6 months...that was enough....you will be free. I just know it. Hugs, Marti
