I'm 55 and have a future now, where I didn't have much of one before.  I Love my RNY, it's changed my life.

********** GASP ! ! ! TOO OLD ????? ******** Never too old my dear, NEVAH NEVAH I'm 59 and thought WLS was frivolous until I did some research. I was always going to get my life together and lose weight...... 75 pounds later I realized I couldn't. I have at least another 25 years left in me and I'm NOT going to live them like I did the last 25 years. My social life revolves around friends and food too. That will never change... I went to culinary school and was afraid I would have to "give up" my love affair with food. Not true, My focus is now on healthy foods and a smaller portion but just as exciting.. .. .. .. Hard ?? well, yes and no. Different ?? oh yes. The pay off is the wonderful new healthy feelings. There will be adjustments but that will happen if you stay obese too.. .. .. .. My kids were afraid I would not get the surgery. They want their ole mom back. The one who did things with them. The one who was not always sick with one thing or another.. .. .. My friends/family/doctor and all were extremely supportive.... not everyone has that. Would I do it again? yes yes yes.. Millie... ************* WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF OFF ***************

Mary, Welcome to OFF!  You opened a box when you asked us our thoughts about having this surgery. . .  I will be 53 next month, last year after a visit with my oldest grandchild and not being able to take her to Disney because I could not be on my feet for more than 2 hours max, I made a decision that I would pursue this avenue.  My daughters were behind me 100% of the way, my son, well he was like your children, but in the end what I cared about most was having a quality of life that I had begun to believe did not exist for me.  This year, when I was visiting my granddaughter for her birthday, I was a totally different person and though we did not go to Disney, we had a great time and I was running up and down stairs, playing with the kids and had energy to spare and I am not even done, as I am only 7-1/2 months post-op and still losing. I told pretty much everyone that I was having the surgery, there were some naysayers, but hey, at least I knew going into it exactly who my supporters were.  I tread softly around others, who've not gone on this journey, respecting that there are some who struggle with their weight, but would not ever consider this surgery.  I come here to share my WOW moments and more of my friends are supportive than not.   Ask your questions, as someone once said and I love it, "the only stupid question is the one you don't ask".  You can't learn something if you don't ask about it, besides most of the people here are all too willing to jump in and offer their knowledge and while some posts take time to get a response, most times, you get what you need and this board in particular has some "old timers" with knowledge. Many times there are challenges to getting to your actual surgery date, pre-screening and the like, so the sooner you get started the sooner your new life will begin!  Good luck Mary, if you travel this road, I doubt very much that you will be sorry. Take care, Laureen

My Mantra is that I do not determine my success by the number hanging in my closet, nor will I let the scale determine that success either. . .  It is through trial and error I will continue to grow and succeed. . .  Laureen

I'm in the process of preparing for wls(RNY), hoping to have it in Sept-Oct.  I too have worried about the age thing but with 2 young granddaughters I decided I want to be around a long.long time. so what the heck.....Last week we went to the park and I went on the swings(thank god it didn't break) I had a blast , forgot how much fun it was. Now I'm thinking about bike riding again.... Long story short..I have to do this for me! Now is my time ti be healthy . Paulette

Oh Paulette! I bought a bike three days ago and it has been so much fun wheeling around town! I could not have ridden this bike without WLS.

Welcome to OFF Paulette. We are so glad that you are here and decided to join us. Everyone here is just like a big happy family. I would choose everyone of these wonderful people to be my family any day of the week. Heck, I would choose these people over some of my own blood family for that matter. You know the old saying you can pick your friends but not your family. lol Keep posting and letting us get to know you and you us. Welcome aboard and you are going to really enjoy your new and improved life for sure!!

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter
that tells what kind of life you have lived.

Thanks for the welcome Benda, I joined the site about 2 weeks ago and mostly stayed on the main board, then I found the Illinois board and now this forum. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming.  My family is very supportive but it is great to get first hand advice and info on wls.  and one can never have too many friends! Thanks again, paulette
