Mary,
Welcome to OFF! You opened a box when you asked us our thoughts about having this surgery. . . I will be 53 next month, last year after a visit with my oldest grandchild and not being able to take her to Disney because I could not be on my feet for more than 2 hours max, I made a decision that I would pursue this avenue. My daughters were behind me 100% of the way, my son, well he was like your children, but in the end what I cared about most was having a quality of life that I had begun to believe did not exist for me. This year, when I was visiting my granddaughter for her birthday, I was a totally different person and though we did not go to Disney, we had a great time and I was running up and down stairs, playing with the kids and had energy to spare and I am not even done, as I am only 7-1/2 months post-op and still losing.
I told pretty much everyone that I was having the surgery, there were some naysayers, but hey, at least I knew going into it exactly who my supporters were. I tread softly around others, who've not gone on this journey, respecting that there are some who struggle with their weight, but would not ever consider this surgery. I come here to share my WOW moments and more of my friends are supportive than not.
Ask your questions, as someone once said and I love it, "the only stupid question is the one you don't ask". You can't learn something if you don't ask about it, besides most of the people here are all too willing to jump in and offer their knowledge and while some posts take time to get a response, most times, you get what you need and this board in particular has some "old timers" with knowledge.
Many times there are challenges to getting to your actual surgery date, pre-screening and the like, so the sooner you get started the sooner your new life will begin! Good luck Mary, if you travel this road, I doubt very much that you will be sorry.
Take care, Laureen
