******** Other Old Fat People Problems ******* that is too funny (except I know all too well what they are) Recovery is going to vary no matter the age or other "problems". Learn to take one day at a time and listen to your body. Be easy on your diet, don't try to rush through the program. Yes, it gets tedious and boring but, Honeychild, this is your body and only you have the power to care for it. The Dr and Nutritionist will be your new best friends.. well, other than us guys/gals here in the land of OFF. LOL I'm proud of you for the willingness to have the surgery. Many in our age bracket would rather just deal with the weight. Soon you will be on the loser's bench with the rest of us......Millie P.S. WELCOME

Hi Millie what a sweet welcome! I intend to toe the line I did not go into this thing lightly I have looked at wls for over a year and finially with my internest blessings I have decided that I would like to have a better quality of life. I understand that a lot of others have more to lose than I do but with my medical problems that can be helped or cured with this procedure. I have a lot of life left in me and I would like to continue doing the things I love for a long time LMAO Thanks again for your warm advice Linda

Hi Linda: Are you having it open or lap? It varies as far as recovery time. I took three weeks off from work for lap; basically, I was exhausted and had a little pain. As for the old fat people problems, I was 49 when I had my surgery and had osteoarthritis in both knees, feet, gerd, spinal arthritis, degenerative disc disease, mild sleep apnea high blood pressure ... see it's not only limited to "old people"! By the way, still have all of those but the high blood pressure ... even the mild sleep apnea is still there; it wasn't caused by my weight but by genetics, go figure.  Good luck on your surgery. There are plenty of people on the board who are your age or older who have had the surgery and done just fine.

Hi! I am older and just had a duodenal switch four days ago because I had begun to have Type II diabetes, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, etc. diagnosed and medicated in the last year. I know I can get a handle on those, but nothing cures them like the DS. My insurance company Benefit Administrative Systems covers them as a vertical gastrectomy and gall bladder removal combined. I feel sore but great and can't wait to lose some weight. I went in with a BMI of 43 and a weight of 240 at 5 feet tall. I attended free and open monthly meetings in Chicago with Dr. John Rabkin for over 8 months (Dr. Rabkin's practice is in San Francsico****il I got my paperwork in order and was approved very quickly. I'm currently in San Francisco recovering with my daughter and her boyfriend. I have my ten day follow up on May 28 then fly home to work with my PCP, Sean O'Conner, MD, a fine internist with Associates in Internal Medicine in downtown Chicago. Dr. Rabkin's office supplied me with a red notebook that has all the information I have needed before and after surgery. If you are confused about what to eat, get a nutritionist to work with you who has other RNY patients. I have seen one (with DS patients) for about 6 months and I started a high protein diet long before the surgery so there were no surprises. Sorry to go on for so long but I felt that a lot of the WLS surgeries were for younger people and didn't want you to feel alone. I don't know much about the RNY. I chose the DS and I think it is right for me. We're all different on that account. Take care and keep me posted. marss

Hi Marss  thanks for the informative message! I hope you are feeling well after your surgery. I have also seen a Nutritionist and will get more detailed directions frin Dr Stewart's office when i go the 27th for my preop exam and counseling. I look forward to starting this new journey and hope to get rid of most of the 11 rx's I am on now. Good Luck with your recovery. Warm Regards Linda
