Is my father eligible?
Good evening. I am scheduled to have WLS this summer. My parents and I have just seen the story about GBP on 60 Minutes, and he is interested in seeing if he may be eligible. I think the greatest concern is that he is 67. Does anyone know if Medicare covers WLS? Would a surgeon perform the surgery on someone his age? Thanks in advance for your input.
Yes, Medicare does cover WLS. I had my surgery last August at age 68. As long as your father meets their guidelines he will be automatically approved......more than 100 lbs. over weight, with other co-morbidities.....i.e. diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, etc.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Done! Your Ticker:
The medical group I belong to would not do a Medicare Lapband but I applied to a teaching hospital (Stanford) and was accepted almost immediately. All the preliminary testing was done through my medical group and the results were forwarded to Stanford. So far I have met once with the resident when my surgery was scheduled forr June 23rd. I will go back on June 3rd and June 9 for some last minute meeting/check-in orientation. Everyone has been very nice and helpful.
