OT: Help/prayers please
Darlene,
Every parent's nightmare as their children START driving and every child's nightmare as their PARENTS age and SHOULDN'T be driving.
My mom failed a driving test at 90 because of not being able to read the eye chart. Her vision was great, hearing kept her from clearly hearing what the tester was saying. We thought that would end it. NO. She retook the test 3 times: written and driving. Got a book, passed the written the first time but nerves and little things kept causing her to fail the driving test. We thought she'd give up. The only way she would would be when they said that's it.
On the 4th time the tester came to the house, got in the car WITH her (!!) and had her drive to the places she normally would go: senior center, post office, grocery store. . . . I'll be darned if they didn't give her a "day time only, within 3 miles of home, between (not on) the highway!" license. She continued for 4 more years until my brother convinced her that her car needed major repairs and it would be more cost effective to sell it and use the "dial a ride" bus service.
I so understand what you are going through. Their independence is so important to them, but my worst fear was of Mom causing an accident where a child that she didn't see wa**** or a bad vehicular accident.
Perhaps this will end your mom's her driving. I haven't been able to open the site. Will try again. Know that you are in my thoughts. Hugs, Karen C

...and when someone breaks our wings, we simply continue to fly...on a broomstick.
We are flexible.

I had a dear friend here on Maui who was in her 80's when she hit a bike rider on the side of the road and drove right on...didn't even know she'd done it! She was blocked in at a grocery story parking lot by two police cars.....she still didn't know she'd done anything wrong. Hard way for many to learn that the joys of driving are over.
I feel sorry for everyone involved in your situation.......everyone. Sending a loving hug ... hope that helps a little.
Aloha nui loa,
Maui Karen
oh dear Darlene!
I am so sorry..I do know some of the anguish that you are suffering because Ive been struggling with my own mother for years now since Dad died. Although mother doesnt drive, she swears emphaticly that if she had her licence, she would be an excellant driver...thank goodness that she chickened out during her first driving lesson...blaming the OTHER drivers, of course.
Denial is their way of protecting themselves from the reality of life..that must be so difficult for them. Worse yet, we must stand by and balance the REAL reality with theirs. My great uncle was furious when they took his licence away because he couldnt hear well anymore.....he was 96 and the most independant Irish man Ive ever come across.
We are here for you, Darlene..trust me, we have all been thru family situations like this and surely do commiserate with you. I ended up having to go on Celexa for stress, prescribed by my dpctpr who said if I didnt take it, mother would have me in my grave from stress...he also had me go for stress counselling which did help me alot.
Sending positive thoughts and prayers for you and your family,
Nancy B
