I am not familiar with Eugene, but I know there is at least one program that is a 'center of excellence"  That means they have completed a certain number of successful surgeries with good results.  The seminars are generally free, they can help you understand the options for surgery.  they often have an insurance person who can tell you the likelihood of approval by OHP.  Normally, your pcp will need to refer you to the surgeon/program to begin the process.  Usually, the surgeon/program with get initial approval to start the pre-op testing, with the final approval for surgery pending.

OMGosh! You have had a hard time of it haven't you! I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope you will feel much better after the hernia is taken care of! Working out right now must be very painful. Take it nice and slow. As for the vitamins I would switch to a tablet vitamin D as soon as possible and double the dosage and see if that brings up your lab work. Do you take the vitamin D at the same time you take your calcium citrate? That will also help with the absorption of the calcium. (and please tell me you are taking the citrate and not the carbonate. We don't absorb carbonate as well, check your calcium bottle it will tell you which one you are taking if your not sure. Just a friendly reminder. )

The D isn't prescription but is in gel capsules and is D-3. I didn't know that about not being able to break down the gel capsules. Blood work shows my protein level is good. I don't eat sugar, hardly no fats at all. I'm watching my carbs because I have blood sugar problems. I've seen a dietitian so my eating seems to be on track. I have bad knees and was walking 2 1/2 miles everyday but had to stop because of the pain. I had injections in them (hyaluronan). I am better in the knees but I have other problems. When I had my bypass surgery they had to open me up and I had 2 emergency surgeries afterward because of an infection. I was in the hospital for 54 days. I have a hernia now in my abdomen. I wear a binder to hold everything in. I am in constant pain because of the hernia pulling on my shoulder muscles. I hurt in my collar bones, shoulders and upper back. I have been working out just recently on the bowflex....simple things. I have started walking again....only one mile a day. So, I am trying. I do need to try harder. I'm having surgery in June to repair the hernia. I work for a school district and will wait until school is out. Thank you so much for the information and for answering my post.

thank you guys so much for your info. Ya, I saw that PDF. I'll bring it with me to my dr. appt. I didn't think OHP would want to give out specifics.  My last dr. made it seem like they're not going to cover me, so don't even try. He told me a story about someone who sued them and they were covered, but outside of forcing them to cover me, they wont. But, I'm feeling a bit more confident now after talking to you guys.

One more question...do you know if OHP -or any insurance for that matter - covers the dr. visits with the surgeons? Probably not, huh, 'cause they have to be on the "approved list". Well, I will just talk with my dr. about all of this. If I have to pay for a couple of appt. out of pocket I will.

So the "local program" for bariatric surgery...is that like one of those seminars that I always hear advertised? Is that the best way to make free contact with a surgeon? From there would I have a chance to consult him for free? (beside the cost of attending the seminar) Or am I pretty much going to have to pay out of pocket to see the surgeon?

Thanks!
Jess

Hi. Couple of questions first. The Vitamin D you are taking, is it prescription or OTC vitamin D-3. If it's the prescription its often the wrong type of vitamin D and that could be part of the problem. are you taking it as a gel or tablet. Tablet is better, we can't break down the gel capsuls after WLS like we could before hand that's another possiblity. I'm sorry I didn't see how far out you where from surgery. Are you still tracking what you eat? what are you getting in for calories/protein/fats/carbs/sugars? are you doing any exercise at all? if so, what kind, how long and how often. I.e. are you walking 30 minutes 2 times a week or running a 5k a day 6 days a week? Are you doing weightlifting and building muscle?

Topic: My protein drink recipe
I buy 100% whey protein powder from Costco. I like the chocolate the best. It comes in a big bag (6 lbs). It has 27 grams of protein. I mix it with non fat milk, about a Tablespoon of Hershey's natural unsweetened cocoa, pure vanilla flavoring and NuNaturals brand of powder stevia. I do this because protein drinks make me gag. This is good without all the extras but I am very picky. I freeze it and then feel like I'm having a treat or ice cream. My next step will be to put it in my portable ice cream maker. It stays in my freezer and makes ice cream in no time. Maybe it will be smoother if I make it with the ice cream maker. I haven't put my protein drink in it yet, that will be tonight. I used to be an ice cream connoisseur but no more! The NuNaturals brand of stevia is the best I have used. You can buy it at Fred Meyers in the health food section. I get my meds from Medco and order the stevia from them, it's cheaper.

Topic: Hello Everyone!
Hello everyone! This is the 1st time I have posted on the Oregon Board. I actually forgot it was here…oops. I have been posting on the main band forum.   My name is Tanya and I was banded on the 17th of February with the standard Lap-Band (10cc). Today is 2 weeks! I’m doing great so far. Still a bit tender where the port is but the other incisions are healing up great.   I went in yesterday for my 2 week post-op check and the Dr was proud of my progress. I was down 16lbs in 13 days!! I was so excited to hear that news.   I still have another 2 weeks of high protein liquids. I won’t start on mushy foods until March 17th and then onto regular foods as tolerated on March 31st, although I go back for my 6 week check and 1st fill on March 30th and will be back on liquids for 24 hours so will start regular foods the afternoon of April 1st.   I know it has not been very long but so far I like the band.   Hope to get to know many of you.
