My current insurance does not cover bariatric surgery or complications from bariatric surgery. I called PERS Health and asked to talk with someone, and will be writing a letter. It seems that, as a state employee, we get coverage for bariatric surgery, but then when we retire and go on PERS Retiree insurance, there is no coverage. I told the person I spoke to that I felt it was a bit like being led down the rabbit hole. I've known several local people who have needed further surgery -- good thing most of them had not retired yet. I think Dr. D is going for medical necessity here - there are precious few things I can tolerate in my diet and I am definitely not able to get all the nutrients I need. Not to mention that falling blood sugar is just downright dangerous. He's a very knowledgeable and reasonable man, so I hope he can get through to them!

Were you able to get the reason your revision was denied?
Hopefully Dr. D will help reverse the denial.
Best of luck!

I will write and tell you when tomorrow night
Don't know how I missed this one. MickeyMantle is right. You need to examine what you're eating. I would guess, if you've managed to gain a lot of weight back, that you don't dump and you've been getting away with eating lots of carbohydrates. That needs to stop. Go back to eating protein, fruits, and vegetables. If you think your stomach has stretched, do me a favor. Make a couple of hard boiled eggs and then see how many you can eat. Even though I know my anastomosis (opening from the pouch into the intestines) is stretched, I can't make it past one egg and a couple of bites. Reason? It is dense protein. It takes a longer time to move through than a lot of foods. A bunch of crackers, some cake or cookies? They move right on through unimpeded. Of course, for me, they move right on through in a major whoosh, because I do dump and my blood sugar falls and I get very sick. Don't give up. As Inigo says in the Princess Bride, "when things go wrong, you go back to the beginning!" Let us know how you're doing.

My surgeon is not giving up as yet. He is preparing to talk with their medical review board as he is positive this is a medically necessary thing for me. I'm prepared, however it may go. I guess I can live like this for another five years till I get to Medicare, but I really hope that won't be the case.
