Are these support meetings open to everyone? My sister-in-law's mother is working toward having bariatric surgery and is looking for more information and researching the surgery. Is this a group I could mention to her?

Hey Linda! Derrick and I just moved to Eugene. Where is Market of Choice?
Hope you can join us! Make sure you have your parking ticket stamped at the 1st floor desk or 6th floor for the day meetings.
These meetings are open to anyone who had is planning to have or is thinking of having bariatric surgery at OHSU.

I don't know how far along in the process your cousin is, but she may want to consider changing to Coos Bay (if she doesn't mind the drive). I have been going to Oregon Bariatric as well. I just finished my entire program there, only to find out that I could not have surgery because Dr. Yarborough was leaving and they did not have a replacement. At this time, they have no surgeon, have no real prospects and have no idea when they will have anyone.
I also found out that they have known that Yarborough was leaving for about a year now and did not tell anyone for fear that patients would leave. They kept people in the program with the hopes that they would have a replacement before he left and only told people about him leaving when they knew they would be without a surgeon.
I don't know your cousin's situation, but in my case - I HAVE to have surgery before the end of the year - or I lose my money in my flexible spending account to pay my costs for surgery. I'm not willing to "wait and see" if they will get a surgeon before then.
Coos Bay said I will have surgery in about 4 weeks. They are also a Center of Excellence and take Medicare and Medicaid. The surgeon there has been at that same location for about 12 years. Just thought I would let you know.
Tami,
I contacted Corvallis about the possibility of going there and they were not at all willing to work with me. Well - I guess that depends on your definition. They would take me as a participant, but they would require me to start their entire program from the beginning, even though I have completed EVERYTHING at Oregon Bariatric - except for surgery. I already took all of my evals (nutrition, psych, everything). I completed a 3 month diet and 3 group classes over a course of 6 months total. They want me to do it all over again. I just really don't see the point in that.
And - if I started over, I may not qualify, because I lost weight on my pre-op diet, and my BMI is lower now. This would also put my surgery to the end of November - if everything went as planned - which we all know NEVER happens.
The main reason I want to change from OBC is because I don't want to chance waiting until the end of the year - so I would be in the same boat - and out more money. Not to mention re-doing another program all over again.
It just didn't sound right to me.
Anyway, I contacted Dr. Tersigni's office in Coos Bay and they are willing to take me without making me "start over". So - if all goes as planned, I should be having surgery in about a month.
Cross your fingers for me!
Thanks for the help and advice!
Keep in touch,
Kim
I contacted his office and Spoke with Robin and I have an appt on 7/24 to meet the doc and attend the one class that they are requiring me to attend to acquaint me with their program. From there, they will schedule me for surgery, once they obtain a new approval from my insurance for their hospital. She said it should only be about 4 weeks. I am so thrilled!
Thanks again! (My family is looking forward to spending a weekend at the coast while I am in the hospital as well!)
It has nothing to do with being special and it is open to all people. The reason I mentioned OHSU patients is that they are the reason I created the group so that I could share information from the monthly group meetings and the dates of the group meetings. I actually do not find OHSU Bariatric home page very useful as far as information for patients goes and just wanted to help disseminate information that I and other OHSU patients might find more useful. I am sorry that my post made you feel the way that you did. Not my intention.
